The championship game has previously taken place in Arlington, Texas, Glendale, Arizona, and Tampa, Florida. The game this year is in Atlanta, and the championship will be held in Santa Clara, Calif., and New Orleans, respectively, until 2020. The NFL announced on July 24, 2016, that the game would not be moving after all.
The game is played between the winners of the AFC and NFC Championship Games. The Super Bowl LII Champions will be playing for their first title. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 in an exciting NFC Championship Game last weekend. It was the first playoff game ever played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis/St. Paul. The Vikings won the toss ceremony and elected to defer on their first opportunity, giving the Patriots a first down on their 20-yard line with 1 minute, 54 seconds left in the third quarter. On the next play from scrimmage, quarterback Nick Foles threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jason Witten with 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 14-13 lead. In the fourth quarter, Brady led the Patriots back down the field, scoring a pair of touchdowns in just over two minutes to tie the game at 21-all. With time running out, Foles drove the Eagles 75 yards in eight plays, using most of his time-outs during the drive.

We now have information on how the newly enlarged 16-team playoff will work. The National League will be based in Texas, with wildcard and NLDS series taking place in Arlington and Houston, while the American League will be based in California, with games taking place in Los Angeles and San Diego. The World Series will begin on October 27th at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
The postseason structure was announced on Thursday by Commissioner Rob Manfred. It is designed to give both leagues an equal chance of winning the World Series.
The AL has 10 teams playing in the regular season, while the NL has 6. This means that each league will have one third of the total number of games played. In addition, each team will play 14 games against other division opponents and 7 games against other league teams. Teams will also face off in interleague play, which will include a home-and-home series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels of Angeles. Interleague play will not affect standings; instead, it will be used as part of the qualifying process for the playoffs. If two teams are tied after they have played each other once, they will advance to a tiebreaker game called the "one-game playoff".
Here is how the postseason will work: Each league will have one team advance to the World Series. They will do so by winning their respective divisions.

Similar to the Super Bowl or the NCAA Final Four, the location of the championship game is determined through proposals filed by cities. The College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy is presented to the game's champion. The trophy was designed by New York-based artist Michael Klim and manufactured by Canadian art glass company, Glass Media Corp.
Cities are awarded games based on a series of criteria that includes the size of the local audience, the revenue that can be generated by the game, and the quality of the venue that will be used. Cities are not required to play their games on their assigned dates and have up to two years to decide what date they want the game on. If no city proposes a date within two years of the initial filing, then the game will be played on January 8, 2018 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The game has been played every year since 2014 with a different city each season.
When the championship game is played at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium in January 2022, it will be the first time in the sport's modern history that a national title has been won outside of the South or West. The Crimson Tide are the only other non-Southern team to have ever held or claimed a title.
The NFL began holding its championship games in 1937. The game was originally known as "the championship of America" and was played each year between December and January. The tournament format continued through 1946 when it became clear that both New York and Chicago would be unable to host the game due to weather conditions. The NFL awarded $100,000 in prize money for the first annual championship game between the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles. The first game was also the first to feature current rules such as a 10-minute play clock and 25-yard field goal range. The trophy that is given out today as part of the league awards show came about in 1974 when the design by Ed Lebow was chosen over another entry from Bert Sugar.
Through the years, many changes have been made to the format of the championship game including moves away from Christmas day and January 1st dates. In 1994, the NFL moved the date of the championship game to late February (currently between Super Bowl Sunday and Presidents Day).
The game is played in a neutral location decided by bids from possible host cities (similar to the Super Bowl and NCAA Final Four). The College Football Playoff National Championship was not won by a top-ranked team until LSU won the sixth edition of the event in January 2020. A champion is determined each year by a single game known as the "national championship."
Before the playoff era, the national champion was determined by a combination of methods including polling, play-calling rules, and fixed contests. Most prominently, the Yerkes Report published a list of teams it believed were best for 1901-1902; that list has been referred to as the "first college football poll." Teams would win their respective conferences based on their rank in the Yerkes Report. If there was a tie, then each school would get a point for each game they had won. The team with the most points at the end of the season was declared the winner. In addition to the Yerkes Report, other methods included ranking games (which we will discuss later in this article) and play-calling rules.
For example, during the 1902 season, Stanford and Yale both had perfect 5-0 records. Since both schools were undefeated, it was not clear who would be crowned the national champion. To resolve this issue, a committee was formed which included two players from each school, along with several prominent sports journalists.
