Emmitt Smith (born May 15, 1969) is a well-known football player. He is presently residing in Pensacola, Florida. Dallas Cowboys running back who retired with an NFL record of 18,355 rushing yards. The longest active player in the NFL, having played only 16 games since 2001 when he suffered his third career shoulder injury.
Before becoming one of the most successful runners in NFL history, Smith played three seasons for the University of Texas at Austin where he was a multi-purpose player. During his time at Texas Austin, he set school records for attempts, yards, and touchdowns. In addition to playing football, Smith also competed in track & field at Texas Austin. He won the national high jump championship in 1989 while attending school there.
After graduating from Texas Austin, Smith went on to have a very successful NFL career. During his first season with the Cowboys in 1990, he led the league in rushing with 1,719 yards. He continued to be one of the top rushers in the NFL throughout the 1990s, reaching the playoffs each year and appearing in multiple all-star games. In 2000, Smith finished second in the voting for the NFL's MVP award after posting consecutive 1,689 yard seasons. He announced his retirement after the 2001 season, but returned for two more campaigns before finally hanging up his boots in 2004.

He also returned punts but did not catch many passes because Larry Cole was the team's primary receiver.
