William Morgan created volleyball in 1895. The Amateur Volleyball Association was founded in 1964 at Methodist Boy High School on Broad Street in Lagos. In 1969, the Nigerian Amateur Volleyball Association was established. Women's volleyball began to be played in Nigeria around the same time as men's volleyball.
Volleyball has many names in different countries. It is known as netball in England, handball in Germany, ping-pong in China, and basketball in the United States.

Volleyball was created. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was formed in Europe in 1947 by 14 pioneering countries, with its headquarters in Paris, France. Since then, it has become an international sport with more than 200 members worldwide.
The FIVB was responsible for setting up the first World Championships in 1955, which are held every four years. They are the most prestigious event in the world of volleyball after soccer's World Cup.
World Championship winners are awarded a trophy called the "World Trophy". The current holder of this prize is Italy who won their third title in 2015.
Italy have also won the last three European Championships, and are therefore considered to be the kings of the court.
The next World Championships will take place in Japan from 19 August to 2 September 2019. The venue for the finals has not been confirmed yet but it could be one of two cities: Osaka or Tokyo.
Both cities can host major events such as these championships because they have large sports facilities available. Osaka is better known for baseball but they use part of their old stadium for volleyball. Tokyo has several options for venues but the most popular would have to be the new National Stadium which opened in 2002.
