The bowl game was originally staged in 1933 to entice winter tourists to visit Florida a month earlier than normal. It was welcomed by local businesspeople and benefitted the struggling fledgling University of Miami, which participated in the early games; but, by 1936, the team's participation was no longer automatic. The game was then won by the visiting team.
There is some debate as to when exactly the first Orange Bowl game was played. Some sources claim it was on January 1, 1934; while others say it was two years later. The most reliable source indicates that the inaugural game was played on January 1, 1934. Either way, it's safe to say that this was quite the event back then!

There have been nine different teams win the Fiesta Bowl. USC and Ohio State have each won four times. Michigan and Colorado have each won twice. The remaining three teams have won once each: UCLA, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.
Ohio State vs. USC was the first all-American game and the first college football game ever broadcast on television. The 1939 matchup between Arizona State and Stanford was also the first football game ever played in California. The Fiesta Bowl has continued the tradition of great games between top-ten teams started by the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl - two other annual championships presented by the NCAA.

After that first season, the program was discontinued due to concerns about whether or not it would be able to compete on an equal footing with the other schools in the Miami Athletic Association. However, it was revived for the 1934 season, and has been active ever since. UM has competed as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I FBS level since the 1978 season. It is also one of four major sports represented by the Miami Hurricane mascot and icon.
