Dwyane Wade's full birth name is Dwyane Dezire Wade. He was born on August 4th, 1979 in Mount Vernon, New York. His mother's name is Maria Del Carmen Wade and his father's name is Gerald Wayne Wade. He has an older sister named Tina who is also an actress. She has appeared in several films and television shows including Bones, Married with Children, and Girl Meets World.
Wade grew up in Palmetto Bay, a suburb south of Miami, Florida. He attended Coral Reef High School where he played basketball. As a senior, he averaged 28 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists per game. After graduating from high school, he went to Providence College for one season before entering the 2003 NBA Draft.
During his time at Providence, he met LeBron James who was attending nearby St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. They became friends and later James invited him to play with his team at the University of Akron. John Salley played only one season in the NBA, but nonetheless made an impact during his time there. He started 33 games for the Miami Heat in 1992-93, averaging 14.4 points per game. The Heat shocked the Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics before losing in the NBA Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers. Last season, Miami finished with a 50-32 record as they lost in five games to the Lakers in the Finals.
Before the draft, many believed that the Heat would select Kentucky Wildcats guard James Blackmon Jr. with their pick, but instead they went for Achiuwa who most consider to be a project. He has great size for a power forward at 7'1" and 270 pounds and plays with an aggressive demeanor around the basket.
Blackmon was expected to be available when the Heat made their first selection, but instead they chose Achiuwa who will have a chance to play right away for an injured player like Young or learn from one of the best power forwards of all time in Shaquille O'Neal.
In four seasons at Memphis, Achiuwa averaged 12.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks in 31.4 minutes per game. He started 36 of 40 games last season and helped lead the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament where they lost to Duke in the First Round.
