The Toronto Raptors selected him in the first round (4th selection) of the 2003 NBA Draft on June 26, 2003. The Toronto Raptors traded him to the Miami Heat on July 10, 2010 in exchange for a 2011 first-round selection pick (Norris Cole was subsequently picked) and a 2011 first-round draft pick (Jonas Valanciunas was later selected).
He played only six games for the Heat before having surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck. This ended his season and forced him to miss the rest of the 2010-2011 season as well.

Signed as a free agent with the Miami Heat on July 11, 2012. On November 1, 2016, he announced his retirement. He will be honored during a ceremony before a game between the Heat and Indiana Pacers.
Allen joined the Sonics after playing one season with the Celtics, where he helped lead Boston to its first NBA title since 1986. The Sonics drafted him ninth overall in 1989. In 1990, he became just the third rookie in NBA history to score at least 20 points in each of his team's games played. The other two are Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant.
