Patriots' Day was established as a national holiday in 1777 when Congress declared March 25th as a day of prayer and fasting towards those who had died during the American Revolution. The first known use of "Patriot's Day" was in 1894 when it was given as an excuse for school children to be absent from class.
In 2001, President George W. Bush signed into law a bill that designated the third Monday of April as National Freedom Day. The president issued a proclamation making this designation effective that year.
In 2013, President Barack Obama signed a bill designating Thursday, April 19th as National Coachella Day.
Patriot's Day is a state holiday in Maine and Massachusetts, where the general public has the day off and schools and most businesses are closed. Patriots' Day is when the Boston Marathon takes place. Runners approach the one-mile mark at Kenmore Square, Boston, Massachusetts. The race ends near Fenway Park in Boston.
The holiday was created in 2003 by legislators in those states to coincide with the anniversary of the 1765 raid on Fort William Henry by colonists under the command of Colonel Robert Rogers (the inspiration for the character of Paul Revere in the famous American song). Government offices in Rhode Island do close on March 17th though, which may indicate another national holiday is scheduled that year.
In Vermont, all state offices are closed on March 17th and all school districts have their regular days.
On July 9, 2020, Major League Baseball released the 2021 regular season schedule. The Red Sox begin their season at Fenway Park on April 1 against the Baltimore Orioles. The All-Star Game is set to take place on July 13. The Red Sox will finish their season on October 3rd, when they play the Washington Nationals at Fenway Park.
During the season, each team plays three games a week, with Monday, Wednesday, and Friday being game days. Some weeks will have five games, others will only have four. Games usually start between approximately 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., although some are started as early as 10:05 a.m. and as late as 8:20 p.m. ET. Fenway Park is known for its grandstands with luxury boxes, but also has an intimate neighborhood feel due to its small size. The original park was built in 1912 by John W. Fitzpatrick, who also constructed Boston's Hotel Fitzpatrick next door. The stadium features ivy-covered walls, classic Fenway architecture, and famous Fens throughout for baseball.
In addition to being one of the most beautiful ballparks in America, Fenway is also unique because it is the only major league ballpark with a neighborhood surrounding it. There are several restaurants within a few blocks of the park, and you can even buy souvenirs at some of the shops on Brookline Avenue before entering the stadium.
Fenway is located in the Fenway District, which is a neighborhood adjacent to the park. It is a predominantly residential area with some businesses near the intersection of Brookline Avenue and Yawkey Way. There are also several other sports facilities in the area including Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots), and JetBlue Park (former home of the New York Mets).
