Yuna Kim's free skate performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver set two ladies' figure skating world records. Loading... The first record was for the fastest total score ever by a female skater (193.71). The second record was for the highest scoring free program (92.58 points).
Kim became the first woman to score over 90 points in an Olympic free skate since Irina Rodnina in 1992. Her score surpassed Rodnina's previous mark of 89.44 points, which she set at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo.
The marks were soon enough broken, with Mao Asada setting a new world record total score of 194.41 points at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Kim went on to win the gold medal that night with a stunning display that included four quadruple jumps. She became the first Asian woman to win an ice dancing medal along with her partner Kim Yu-na.
Kim and her partner have won three consecutive World Championships from 2009 to 2011, and five out of the last six Grand Prix events they have competed in.
She has also become one of the most popular athletes in Korea, with many fans calling her "Queen Yuna".

Kim began learning ice skating when she was 3 years old. She started training under Hong Suk-hoi in Seoul before moving to Japan at age 10 to train under Hiroko Harima. In 2001, at the age of 11, she became the youngest ever athlete to win the Grand Prix Final, an event that decides the best skaters in the world. Two years later, at the same competition, she became the first woman to land a triple axel during the free skate.
After winning two gold medals at the World Championships, Kim retired from competitive skating at the end of the season. However, she returned in 2008 after being persuaded by her coach to try out for the Olympics.
