In 1948, the outdoor form of volleyball—a two-on-two match played on sand—was introduced as a competitive sport. It gained popularity following its debut in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. It has been a thriving professional sport for decades and is now one of the fastest-growing collegiate sports. Volleyball is believed to have originated in Italy around the 15th century.
There are two main differences between traditional tennis and volleyball: 1 There are only two players per team instead of four; 2 A basketball is used instead of a racquet. Both differences make volleyball a more physical game than tennis. A player can get hit in the head or neck with a ball, so protective gear is required.
People play volleyball because it is fun. Like any other sport, you will not be able to enjoy yourself if you are not having a good time. However, beyond just having fun, there are reasons why people play volleyball as a sport. The game provides an opportunity for friendship and teamwork. You will always find people who will help each other out when needed during a game. This spirit of cooperation helps people overcome personal problems and stay positive even under difficult circumstances.
Volleyball styles The sport of beach volleyball and indoor volleyball originated in the United States. Volleyball has been an official sport of the Summer Olympic Games since 1964, thus they are still extremely popular sports. Today, almost every country in the world plays some form of volleyball.
There are two main types of volleyball: beach volleyball and indoor volleyball.
Beach volleyball is played on a sand court with two teams of two players each. It is played by hitting a ball with a racket and jumping over it or into it to score points. Beach volleyball was invented in the 1950s at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The first international men's tournament took place in 1973 in Brazil. In 1984, the first women's world championship was held in Japan. In 2001, beach volleyball was added to the Olympics as an independent event.
Indoor volleyball is played on a carpeted floor with two teams of six players each. It is played by hitting a ball with a broomstick or a paddle and jumping over it or into it to score points. Indoor volleyball was invented in the 1960s at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. The first international men's tournament took place in 1969 in Puerto Rico. In 1983, indoor volleyball was included in the Olympics as a demonstration sport.
Beach volleyball became popular in the United States during the Great Depression, as well as in the 1940s and 1950s. Volleyball was formally included to the list of Olympic sports in 1964, and beach volleyball was added in 1996, resulting in a worldwide surge in popularity for both variants of the sport. In the United States, beach volleyball is widely regarded as an alternative activity to traditional sports such as football and baseball. However, outside of these two countries it is more common to find volleyball players in their 30's and 40's.
Volleyball has many different names around the world. It is called "Pétanque" in France, "Palla di Spiaggia" in Italy, and "Bau-Ball" in Germany.
In Latin America, volleyball is known as "Voleibol". The word "volleyball" comes from the Portuguese verb "voar", which means "to fly". So, volleyball is also known as "the flying ball game".
The first known reference to a version of modern volleyball appears in a book written by George Fenwick in 1869. However, this version of the game was not recognized as true volleyball until much later, when Sir James Black used the current rules in 1896.
Black was a British merchant captain who lived in Manila, Philippines.
