Babb was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and raised in South Shields by parents who were both former professional footballers. In November 2011, it was announced that Babb had joined the team behind Britain's Got Talent as a judge. He replaced David Walliams who stood in for Simon Cowell due to the latter's pregnancy. His first show aired in May 2012 and he has since become one of the most popular judges on the panel.

More importantly to Keown, having played for England at under-18 and under-21 level, he did not make his full debut until he was 26. At one stage, efforts were made to try and switch to the Republic of Ireland. In 1998, when Keown was playing for Southampton, Michael Owen had tried out for Ireland but a paperwork error meant that he could not represent either country. Despite this mistake, Irish managers had seen enough promise in Keown to include him in their squad for the upcoming 1998 World Cup qualifiers.
Keown earned his first cap against France on 8 February 1996. He came on as a half-time substitute for Chris Woods and helped Ireland secure a 1-0 victory. His performance won him over the fans and earned him a place in the starting line-up for the next match against Russia, which finished as a 0-0 draw. Keown continued to perform well and after three more matches without defeat, Ireland hosted Wales on 27 March 1996. The game ended in a 2-2 draw but it was Ireland who went into the lead through Keown's header. He kept his place for the next match against Germany but lost 3-1. After this defeat, Bob Bradley replaced Terry Venables as Ireland's manager and Bradley decided to give other players a chance to prove themselves. This included allowing Keown some rest and allowing Dermot Bannon to take over the captain's armband.
