Evander Holyfield (born October 19, 1962) is a former professional boxer from the United States who competed from 1984 to 2011. He was the undisputed champion at cruiserweight in the late 1980s and heavyweight in the early 1990s, and he is the only boxer in history to have won the undisputed title in two weight divisions during the three-belt period.
Holyfield started his professional career on January 16, 1984 with a second-round knockout win over Willie Peppler in Hialeah, Florida. He went on to win his first 15 fights by knockout or submission, including victories over future champions Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas. In November 1987, Holyfield fought for the WBA cruiserweight championship against reigning champion Andrew Maynard. Holyfield dominated most of the fight, using his powerful left hand to score a knockdown twice, but he lost by unanimous decision. After this defeat, he moved up to heavyweight.
In December 1992, Holyfield fought for the vacant WBC title against James "Bonecrusher" Smith. The fight took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended in a no-contest after Smith was disqualified for hitting below the belt following a clash of heads. After this fight, Holyfield resigned as WBC heavyweight champion so he could concentrate on being a box-er instead of also having a job. He returned to the ring in August 1993 to defend his WBA title against Charles DeGlopper.
Evander Holyfield is regarded as one of boxing's all-time greats. He was a champion whose professional career lasted from 1984 until his final bout in 2011, when he was 48 years old, against Sherman Williams. According to BoxRec, he had a 27-year reign of glory that concluded with a final record of 44-10-2. That makes him the only boxer who has won the World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and WBC titles.
Holyfield's first fight as a professional boxer was on October 10, 1984. He lost by knockout to David Loiseleur in the second round. However, he quickly recovered from this setback and within a year had become the youngest fighter ever to win the WBA title at age 18 and five days, surpassing Roberto Duran's previous record by more than two years.
He defended his title seven times before losing it to Michael Dokes by TKO in the eighth round of their match on January 4, 1990. After losing his title, Holyfield returned to the ring just nine months after giving up his belt. He defeated future champion Kendall Holt by unanimous decision in a non-title affair to set up his rematch with Dokes. This time around, however, Holyfield was no match for his younger opponent and went down in history as one of boxing's biggest losers when he dropped a decision to him. The scorecards read 118-109, 117-110 and 116-111 in favor of Dokes.
