The teams have met three times in the playoffs, each time producing a memorable, classic match. In 1976, the Patriots defeated the Raiders in the regular season, 48-17, before falling in the playoffs, 24-21, in Oakland. After defeating the Raiders, 27-20, in Los Angeles, the Patriots proceeded to their first AFC Championship Game in 1985. They fell to the Miami Dolphins, 17-14.
In 1994, the two teams again faced off in the postseason, this time with the Raiders trying to end their four-year title drought and the Patriots looking to go further than the previous year. The Patriots won that game too, 31-30, on Adam Vinatieri's 50-yard field goal as time ran out.
In 2001, the Patriots returned to the AFC Championship Game for the fourth time in five years. This time they were aiming to win their second Super Bowl title in three years. Led by quarterback Tom Brady and wide receiver Randy Moss, the Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams, 23-16.
The Raiders came back from an early 20-3 deficit to take a 30-27 lead with less than six minutes left in the game. But then Brady led seven straight scoring drives, five of them longer than 60 yards, to seal the victory for his team.
This makes Brady just the third quarterback in NFL history (Kurt Warner is one) to win the MVP award after losing his first game ever.
