The National Basketball Association (NBA) regular season for male athletes in the United States spans from October to April, with the playoffs lasting until June. It is not uncommon to play three to four games every week, with the option of competing on consecutive days. The NBA was founded in 1946 by a group of American businessmen who wanted to create a more professional league than the existing one based in Canada.
Basketball is a very popular sport in the United States, with over 9 million people playing it. It is most popular among adults, but young people also play basketball. No national team dominates the game, but the United States men's team has won all but one Olympic gold medal since its inception in 1936.
There are several factors that make basketball unique as a sport. Games only last five minutes or less - often much shorter - which means that there is no time to rest between plays. This can be frustrating for fans who want to see long offensive sequences or single players go off for scoring streaks, but such opportunities don't exist in real life basketball.
Because there is so little time between plays, coaches need to use their time wisely during stoppages in action. This is where strategy comes into play: planning the next move before the current one is completed.
Every Christmas, ABC/ESPN broadcasts five NBA games, and 2020 was no exception. The NBA confirmed that the 72-game regular season would be cut short on May 16. As a result, the 72 games would be played over the course of 145 days. As a result, each team would play a game every other night on average. In addition, there would be only 17 weekend games played because many teams cannot afford to lose any games due to the high cost of labor and equipment.
The shortened season will begin on January 20, with the Miami Heat hosting the New York Knicks at 8:30 PM EST on ESPN. The last game of the season will be on May 16, with the Los Angeles Clippers hosting the Golden State Warriors at 4:30 PM PDT on TNT.
This year's Christmas Day matchup will feature the Boston Celtics vs. the Philadelphia 76ers. It will be played at 5:00 PM ET on ABC.
The Orlando Magic will host the San Antonio Spurs on April 2 at 8:30 PM ET on ABC/Disney+. This will be one of two meetings this season between these two teams. The other one will be on April 9 when the Magic will visit Texas for an afternoon game at 3:30 PM CDT on ESPN.
The Sacramento Kings will host the Utah Jazz on April 9 at 10:30 PM ET on ESPN+.
