Lamar University's football team competes in collegiate football at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (previously Division I-AA) level. The Cardinals have been members of the Southland Conference since 1981 when they moved up from Division II.

The team was founded in 1891 as a member of the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC). They have played in the MAC ever since with the exception of 1943 when they were members of the World War II-era GI Bill College Football League. In 1945, they joined what would become known as the Mid-American Conference (MAC), but left after one season to join the Midwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association before returning to the MAC in 1946.

Stanford uses an offense called "Air Raid" that combines elements from several different styles of football to create a highly effective attack for both passing and running the ball. Under head coach David Shaw, who took over after Jim Harbaugh left for the San Francisco 49ers, Stanford has resumed its place as a top-10 college football program.
The team's first game under this new regime was a 24–7 loss at California on September 30, 2011. They have not lost since then, finishing with a 10–3 record and their first Pacific Division title since 2004. They played in the 2012 Pac-12 Football Championship Game where they lost to Oregon 42–14. The team advanced to the 2013 Rose Bowl where they defeated Michigan State 34–28 in one of the greatest comebacks in college football history. They have won at least nine games each year since their last losing season in 2003 when they finished 6–5.
Stanford's average home attendance of 51,943 makes them the most attended football school in California and 9th overall in the country.
