Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a 2013 fantasy novel written by Rick Riordan. The book is the first in the series titled The Heroes of Olympus. It was published on June 3, 2013 by Disney/Hyperion. The story is set in Greece around 350 B.C. where young Percy Jackson encounters other mythical creatures while exploring a cave with his father. There he finds out that he is a descendant of both Zeus and Poseidon which explains why he can communicate with water beings as well as earth ones.
In 2014, a movie based on the book was released.
