Soccer was the most popular sport among Russians in 2018, according to 59 percent of poll respondents. The next most popular sports were basketball (11 percent) and ice hockey (10 percent).

Fútbol as we know it today came into being in England in the mid-18th century when association football was evolved from original rules that required each player to kick a ball with his foot or hit it with his head or shoulder.
Russia has held several international tournaments involving multiple countries. The most famous of these is the World Cup which is held every four years. Russia has never won this tournament but they have made it to the final three times. They last played in 2014 when Argentina beat Germany 1-0 at Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã Stadium. This was the last match at the stadium before construction began on a new one named Estadio De La Bombonera.
The percentage of responders interested in hockey was slightly lower, at 55%. Approximately one-third of the population selected mixed martial arts (MMA).
In addition to these three sports, there are other activities that attract more than 10 million people a year in Russia. These include athletics with a distance theme (running, jumping), gymnastics, tennis, basketball, and swimming.

The national team is called Russia and they play in the UEFA European Football Championship and the FIFA World Cup.
There are several reasons why soccer is so popular in Russia. It's an easy game to learn and it offers many opportunities for teamwork. The season is long (usually between late fall and early spring) and games are often important because they can change series standings or determine which league title will be contested.

Russia won the World Cup in 2014. The team was led by former player Fabio Capello and comprised players from various clubs across Russia. Before that, Russia had never won a tournament held under the auspices of FIFA (the world's largest football governing body).
