Mickey Mantle, step aside. There's competition for the highest expensive trading card ever sold. At $5.2 million, a LeBron James 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite rookie patch signature set a record for the most valuable basketball card ever sold, tying Mantle for the most expensive card ever. The previous record was $3.6 million, set by a 1993-94 Fleer Ultra auto patch card featuring Michael Jordan.
The award is based on the price tag at the time of sale. If one wants to pay less now, they can sell it later for more money. Or not, since no one really buys trading cards anymore. But hey, if you're going to spend $5.2 million on a card, why bother selling it later? Just keep it in your collection.
April 26, 2021 At $5.2 million, a LeBron James 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite rookie patch signature set a record for the most valuable basketball card ever sold, tying Mantle for the most expensive card ever. PWCC rated the card as a 9 mint when it was auctioned on April 26. It now ranks as the most valuable card in NBA history.
The previous record holder was also an Upper Deck Exquisite card featuring a rookie player. It was a Michael Jordan 1993-94 card priced at $3.5 million and ranked as the most expensive sports card ever sold. It was sold at Sotheby's New York City auction house on August 3, 2019.
A total of nine cards have reached or exceeded $1 million each at auctions worldwide. They are all Upper Deck Exquisite cards featuring rookie players. The highest ranking card is #9, which is worth $5.2 million. The lowest ranking card is #113, which is only worth $250,000.
Upper Deck has not revealed the identity of the rookie players featured on these cards. But we can assume they are young players who were expected to become stars but instead had their careers cut short by injury.
It's possible there will be more records broken in the future.
