If a pitcher hits two hitters in the same inning or three in a game, he must leave the game. It is a sort of protection rather than punishment. If a pitcher keeps pitching after this point, his team will be given a free pass to win the game by default.
The rule was adopted by the National League in 1869. At that time, there were no restrictions on pitchers throwing games; thus, the need for the rule. The idea came from John Montgomery Ward, who managed the Cincinnati Red Stockings at the time. He felt if a pitcher could hit back-to-back batters, he should be able to stay in the game long enough to finish off the opposing team's batting order.
There have been some exceptions to this rule over the years. A pitcher can remain in a game after hitting two batters if the third hitter reaches first base safely or gets thrown out trying to advance to second base. If a pitcher goes beyond three batters faced, he is said to have reached the maximum number of pitches allowed in an inning. If he leaves the game before finishing the inning, this would be considered an illegal act and would result in any earned runs scored by the opponent during that inning being awarded to the pitcher's team.
Except that, unless injured or dismissed, each pitcher must face at least three batters or finish an inning before being removed from the game. A pitching change can be made during an inning only if both pitchers are still in the game. If one pitcher is replaced during an inning, then the other pitcher will not be required to face any more batters.
If a batter reaches base when a pitcher makes a mistake, then he or she will usually get called out. However, if the pitcher gets a new opportunity to start an inning after the error, then he or she may be able to retire the remaining batters and escape punishment. This depends on how many people are on base when the error occurs; if there are only two people left on base, then the pitcher cannot begin another inning. If there are more than two people on base, then the pitcher can try again.
It is important for pitchers to remain in the game until they reach completion of an inning or they will be removed by their team. Pitching changes can happen during any part of an inning, but most decisions are made during the first half of the inning. The second pitcher comes into the game at this point and has not been allowed to warm up or do anything else related to baseball besides pitch.
Three blows A hitter is permitted three strikes at bat before being ruled out. This is known as a strikeout, and it is not what a batter wants to happen. Behind home plate, the umpire determines whether a pitch is a strike or a ball. There are several different ways an umpire can signal a strike, including waving his finger in the air, pointing to any part of the body other than his hand, and clicking his tongue.
If an umpire signals a strike with his finger, that means the pitch was in line with the batsman's elbow when he swung his arm back for a swing-at-the-pitcher's-ball motion. If the pitch is outside this zone, then it is a ball. If the bails come off the barrel of the bat during a swing, then there has been no contact made with the ball and so it is not a strike.
An umpire can also signal a strike by pointing to a part of the body other than his hand. For example, he may point to the chest, shoulder, or head to indicate that a pitch is a strike. Finally, an umpire can signal a strike by clicking his tongue. When an umpire uses his hand, foot, or leg to signal a strike, that action should be visible from behind the plate.
A strikeout occurs when a hitter receives three strikes, and the batter is immediately out unless the pitch is not caught by the catcher or if the pitch bounces before being caught. When a strikeout occurs, the batting team will be put out of contention, but the game will continue because there are still other teams in the league. When a batter reaches base on an error or a fielder's choice, he or she is called up for another plate appearance. If the same player gets re-hit by the pitcher before being retired, this is called a new ballgame.
In addition to putting more batters out of the game, a strong pitching staff can cause many offensive runs to score during their time on the mound. A strong offense can also help limit the amount of damage done by the pitchers.
The number of balls in play during an inning varies depending on how many times a batter reaches base. If a batter reaches base once every time up, then there will be one ball in play per trip to the plate. However, if that same batter reaches base four times, then there would be four balls in play per at-bat. In general, there is one ball in play per eligible batter plus any runners on base at the end of an inning.
Each player is limited to three pitches. If the batter fails to knock any of the three pitches into fair area, he is out. The pitcher is not required to field the ball.
A third strike is called when the pitcher throws and strikes the batter on three different pitches. This means that all three balls thrown by the pitcher are strikes.
There is no rule that requires the pitcher to show the ball before throwing it. However, most coaches recommend that the pitcher show the ball so that the batter knows what type of pitch will be thrown.
In addition to the three true pitches, a softball pitcher can use various tricks in order to deceive the batter. These include:
Faking a pitch - Instead of throwing a real pitch, the pitcher may simply pretend to throw one. This can confuse the batter if she expects one thing but gets something else. Faking can also be used as a strategy when there is nothing else to do with the ball. A pitcher who has run out of real pitches can fake ones until the end of the game or until she needs to use one of her other strategies.
Using the elbow - When making contact with the ball, the arm acts like a spring. As the ball leaves the hand, the shoulder and elbow should remain straight.
