The 2014 Sochi Olympics will feature 88 countries and 2,800 athletes from those countries. The only country not participating is North Korea, which banned its citizens from attending the games due to "political reasons."
North Korea's absence is significant because it marks the first time in eight years that a South Korean athlete has won a gold medal. The country was also supposed to send a team but they missed their flight after an argument between two passengers caused them to be removed from the plane by security officials.
In addition to South Korea, Canada and United States also have no athletes competing in snowboarding or ice hockey.
Canada's omission marks the first time since 1964 that neither Canada nor the United States has had at least one representative at a Winter Olympic event.
Two American athletes did compete in these events but they were disqualified for violations of rules regarding steroids and blood doping. American skier Jeff Snowder tested positive for stanozolol, a steroid drug, and his results were disqualified. American biathlete Alexander Green also tested positive for recombinant erythropoietin (rEPO), which is used to boost red blood cell production, and his results were disqualified as well.
