You will require a Virginia Saltwater Recreational License or a Maryland Bay (Tidal) Sport Fishing License to fish in the Potomac River. Both licenses are available from your local department of natural resources office or online at dnr.virginia.gov and maryland.org.

Some of the most popular places to go fishing include George Washington Memorial Park Lake in Virginia, where you can catch black bass, white bass, bream, freshwater drum, and gar. If you're more interested in catching sea trout, have we got an area for you! The Potomac River near Great Falls, Virginia, is home to one of the largest populations of sea trout in North America. The river is also known as a great place to catch rainbow trout, but if you plan to target those, be sure to check with local regulations before you go fishing.
Saltwater fishing is also popular in the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland and Virginia.
Virginia Any bearer of a valid Maryland Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Sport Fishing License, regardless of domicile, may fish in Virginia tidal saltwater if they have secured a Virginia Saltwater Angler Registration. A non-resident may fish for trout in Virginia freshwater only if he or she has a valid North Carolina fishing license.
If you have a valid Maryland or Potomac River Fisheries Commission fishing license, you may not need additional license to fish in Virginia. However, if you plan to stay in Virginia for more than 48 hours, you will need a Virginia fishing license.
Out-of-state licenses are available from any license agent of the Department of Game & Inland Fisheries. These agents can be found by calling 1-800-932-2427 or going to www.maryland.gov/game. You must bring proof of identity and your driver's license with you when you pick up an out-of-state license.
Licenses are valid for five years. If you move to another state, contact that state's game agency to see if they issue out-of-state licenses.
You cannot use your Maryland fishing license in Virginia unless you have a Virginia fishing license. To ensure you do not violate this rule, we recommend you obtain a Virginia fishing license before you go fishing in Virginia.

Maryland citizens who are 100 percent service-connected handicapped veterans or former prisoners of war are eligible for a free lifelong license. The non-tidal angler's license, Chesapeake Bay sport fishing license, and trout stamp are all included in the license. Applicants must meet certain age requirements to be eligible for a license.
Those over 18 years old can apply for a license online at Office of the Commissioner of Natural Resources (OCNR) Website. Additional licenses may be available at local offices. Veterans can show their identification card with "100% Handicapped Veteran" written on it to prove eligibility.
Licenses should be printed before they expire so check the date on your license every time you go fishing.

A Sportsman's Permit Saltwater fishing is not included. This covers fishing in public mountain trout waterways, trout waters on game lands, shared waters, and game lands hunting. It excludes fishing in coastal seas. Also excluded are ponds, lakes, reservoirs, and other bodies of water that do not contain fish. These are usually defined as fresh water.
Saltwater fishing requires a license. You must obtain a license from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). The cost is $15 for adults, $10 for youth 16 years old and younger, and free for children 15 years old and younger. A non-resident saltwater fishing license is $60.
The NC lifetime sportsman's license covers freshwater and saltwater fishing. It is available only to citizens of North Carolina who are at least 18 years old. The license is valid for your entire life and does not need to be renewed. However, you can't use it after reaching the age of 70 years.
People who hold a valid U.S. passport can use their passport instead of a driver's license to prove they are eligible for this license.
In addition to the lifetime license, the NCWRC also offers an annual permit.
A freshwater fishing license may be purchased online. Purchase your license over the phone. Purchase your license from a local retail agent. Check with the office of the county tax collector. Keep in mind that you may be asked to provide proof of your state residence, such as your driver's license number or state identity card.
Saltwater fishing licenses can only be purchased at a commercial license dealer. These businesses can be found by contacting the Department of Marine Resources (DMR). Saltwater fishing licenses are also available by mail; however, there is a $10 postage fee for all orders under $100. To order by mail, visit www.mt.gov/dmr/ and follow the instructions.
Yes, they are transferable. However, each transfer must be processed through a DMR office.
If you move away from the state of Montana then you will need to let us know where you are going to be fishing so we can remove your license from consideration. You cannot use it outside of the state you are licensed in. If you forget to tell us where you are going then you can get a new license when you arrive in another state.
