Each of your goals is worth one point. A goal may only be scored from within the shooting circle, which is a semicircle in front of the opposing goal. Goals from outside this region are not permitted. The ball must be passed or dribbled down the field on the flat side of the stick to get into a scoring position. If it is kicked, it may be played again.
A power-play goal is scored when the player gets a rebound off the ice after another player has taken a shot. This can happen when there is no play during an icing call, or because the referee whistles for a faceoff while the other team is attacking. Power-play goals don't count against the opponent's penalty kill if they occur during 5-minute periods or less. However, if the game goes beyond 10 minutes, then every goal counts toward their respective teams' totals.
In double overtime, each team receives one chance to score per period. If neither team scores, we go to triple overtime where each team gets one chance per period. If no team scores during these time frames either, we declare a tie and adjourn for the day.
During regular season games, there is no third period. The first team to reach 15 points wins. In playoff games, however, if both teams are tied at the end of two periods they will continue playing until one team reaches 15 points.
A field goal is an open-play goal that can only be scored from inside the "striking circle," in front of the opposing goal. A goal is not scored if the hockey ball is struck from outside the circle and enters the goal. Hockey players are not permitted to trip, shove, charge, interfere, or violently handle an opponent in any way. They may not use their hands as weapons unless they are wearing gloves.
Field hockey is a non-contact sport, so there are no fouls called for excessive body contact. However, even though there is no contact, players must still know their position on the field at all times. It is possible to score from outside the circle in field hockey if your teammate leaves their zone early or takes a pass from outside the circle.
In addition to goals, there is a penalty corner system in place to control play and give teams opportunities to attack the opposition's end. The four main types of penalties are kicks, stalls, free kicks, and offsides. Kicks are given when a player crosses the line before the ball into their own half of the field. These penalties can be taken by any team member, but it is usually done by a midfielder or forward. Stalls occur when a player does not enter their defensive zone within 10 seconds after the whistle has been blown for defense. This allows the other team time to move the ball into their offensive zone. Free kicks are given to a team when they violate any rules while receiving the ball.
Until the ball is inserted, the rest of the attack must take place outside the shooting circle. Before shooting for a goal, the ball should be managed. If the original shot on goal is a hit, the ball must cross the goal line at no more than 18 inches in height (which is the height of the board at the back of the goal).
However, if you want to score from an indirect free kick, then the shooter can be anywhere within the playing area, as long as they are over the touchline. The shooter cannot be behind any opponents so they need to stay close to the end lines or play into feet.
In addition to this, there are two other ways to score goals: penalties and offsides. On all penalties and direct free kicks, the goalkeeper does not receive a card and may stay in the circle until the ball is played by a member of the attacking team. On all indirect free kicks, the goalkeeper receives a card and must leave the circle immediately. They can return once the ball is kicked away by a player from either team.
Finally, there is one more way to score: offsides. This occurs when a player with the ball is touched by an opponent who has not committed themselves fully to the tackle. The player gets a free kick where they were standing when they were fouled. This means that if an opposing player is standing in front of the goal scorer, they will get a free kick just before they would have been able to stop them scoring.
