While NFL players are not required to attend school in order to become professional football players, the NFL and NCAA both have educational requirements. A player must be three years out of high school to be picked into the NFL. That implies that before entering the NFL, a player must have at least a high school graduation. However, many players choose to go to college first, partly because it provides an opportunity to play early in life, but also because it helps them improve their chances of making the team when they enter the draft.
The minimum grade point average (GPA) for admission into an NCAA Division I football program is 2.0. This requirement applies to freshmen and transfers. In addition, students must meet other academic criteria to be eligible for promotion to the next level of competition.
In Division II and III, the minimum GPA for admission is 1.75. Students who do not meet this threshold can still apply with evidence of having achieved success in the classroom. They just won’t be considered for admission until after they’ve attended for a year or more. Also, unlike in Division I, there is no upper limit on how much time can pass between graduating from high school and becoming a professional athlete.
In the NBA, the maximum contract length is five years. Players can opt out of the final year of their contract if they feel like it’s not worth it financially.
Underclassmen and those who graduate before exhausting their collegiate eligibility can petition the NFL to be drafted early. Only the year after the conclusion of their collegiate eligibility may players enter the draft.
Other Requirements for Entry into the NFL Every collegiate football player has four years of eligibility if he or she meets the academic and other criteria set by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He may play collegiate football and enhance his talents for up to four years of eligibility.
Eligibility of Players Players must have been out of high school for at least three years and have used up their college eligibility before the start of the following college football season to be eligible for the draft. High School Students who play football in the fall and basketball in the spring are often called “fall runners.” Their seasons usually end in late November or early December, allowing them time to recover from any injuries they may have incurred during play.
In addition to these requirements, players will need to meet other criteria to qualify as prospects. The main one is that they must be free agents (not drafted) and available to teams. However, some players can enter the draft after it has begun if they believe it will benefit their career prospects. This rarely happens but when it does, it’s called a “redshirt year.”
For example, Patrick Willis was just a junior in high school when he started playing defensive back for John Marshall High School in Southfield, Michigan. He ended up becoming one of the most promising young linebackers in college football, before deciding to forgo his final year of high school to join the Michigan Wolverines. He was deemed eligible by NCAA rules because he had used up his remaining collegiate eligibility months before the start of the 2002 season.
Willis was not the only high school player to do this.
Four (4) years Players who wish to enter the NFL draft must exhaust all of their collegiate eligibility before the start of the next college football season. Typically, this means students finish four years of college and earn a degree of their choice. Those who have not yet graduated may ask the NFL to be drafted early. Students who want to continue playing football while working toward a degree can apply as soon as they receive their diploma.
There is no specific date after which a player cannot apply for a visa if he or she wishes to play professional football. The NFL has expressed concern about the impact that such a rule would have on the industry but it is not prohibited by law.
In 2014, 24 players came out after they had completed their fourth year in the league. Only five have been released thus far in 2015.
The average salary of an NFL player is $724,000.
The highest paid player of all time is guaranteed more than $100 million over his career. He played during the free agency era and ended his career with the Chicago Bears in 2018. During his time with the team, he won two Super Bowls and was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. His name is Roger Staubach and he made almost $300,000 per season at the end of his career.
The lowest paid player of all time was born in 1959 and his contract expired after seven seasons.
For three years Eligibility of Players Players must have been out of high school for at least three years and have used up their college eligibility before the start of the following college football season to be eligible for the draft. If a player decides to return to college after his name is called in the draft, he will have to sit out another year.
The number of years that a college football player can remain on campus and still be eligible for the draft depends on when they sign with a pro team. In most cases, players need to use up their remaining collegiate eligibility if they want to be able to continue playing after they turn 19. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, such as when a player turns professional after his third year of college eligibility or when a program fails to advance past the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) playoffs during that player’s career.
