Players must serve to their opponent diagonally across the net. As points are earned, serving stations switch from one side to the other. Because there are no second serves, if your first serve is returned, your opponent wins the point. A serve must be delivered under the server's arm and below the server's waist. If the ball hits the hand or any part of the body other than the shoulder, it is a fault; otherwise, it is a winner.
Faults occur when a player sends the shuttlecock out of bounds or into the net. If a player receives a violation card from the referee, he/she has 30 seconds to resume play. If they do not, then that point is lost forever. The player cannot continue until he/she has re-served the ball.
The object of the game is to drive the shuttlecock past the opposing team's singles players into the court behind them. You can reach this area by hitting the shuttlecock with a racquet face down over the net toward the other court. You score when you hit the shuttlecock so that it lands in one of these pockets. The server's intention is to give the ball enough speed to reach the other player but not so much as to go over their head. They should hit the ball with the sides of their hand at a slight upward angle (this is called "hitting through the ball").
If the server hits the ball cleanly and accurately, they have successfully served a volley. This is good news for the receiver because it means that they will now be able to hit back if they want to continue the game. A successful serve can open up the court for your teammate if they are struggling to get into the action or it can help them close it out if they are having success putting pressure on their opponent.

If a player reaches seven points before the end of the match, they win automatically without needing to win by two games or more. Otherwise, the player with the most remaining points after three minutes of play time will win.

At 29 all, the team that scores the 30th point wins the game. In case of a tie at 20 all, each side gets one last chance to win by scoring more points than their opponent.

Both types of court have their advantages and disadvantages; it's just a matter of personal preference as to which kind of court you want to play on.
In order to win a game, you need to gain two points on your opponent. You can do this by hitting their shuttlecock away from the net with a strong swing of the racket, or by hitting it over the net into their court.
