However, even with these improvements, modern composite racquets will still require significant resources to produce.
The traditional method of producing a composite tennis racquet involves taking a cylindrical stick of wood, called a rod, and cutting it into various lengths (usually around 20 inches or 50 centimeters). The end grain of the wood is then removed, leaving only the outer surface layer. Next, several layers of cloth are glued to the outside of the rod, one on top of the other. When finished, the entire assembly is soaked in water to remove any remaining glue residue. This process is repeated until all the cloth fibers are evenly distributed throughout the wood frame.
This traditional method is resource intensive due to the need for fossil fuels in the form of electricity and heat to cure the glue and dry the finished product. It also generates large amounts of waste due to the need for redundant material in order to ensure strength and durability. Other materials found in tennis rackets are nylon, gut, or synthetic gut for the strings, and leather or synthetic material for the handle grip. Nylon is probably the most common string material, and only a few professionals still use gut, which is made from twisted cow or sheep intestine. Synthetic gut is a modern alternative that has replaced gut because it does not break down with use.
In addition to these components, there are also metal parts inside the frame of the racquet that help hold the strings in place while you hit them. There are different types of tennis games that use different-sized balls.
