Following events When the Cincinnati Royals relocated to Kansas City and became the Kansas City Kings in 1972, professional basketball returned to the city. The Kings relocated to Sacramento, California, in 1985, and Kansas City has been without an NBA team since. However, on May 14, 2017, the New Orleans Pelicans announced that they had acquired the rights to relocate to Seattle for the 2018-19 season.
The Seattle SuperSonics were a National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise based in Seattle. Founded in 1967 as one of the original league teams, they played their home games at the Seattle Center Coliseum. In July 1976, the Sonics moved to Florida after three seasons where they failed to earn a spot in the playoffs each year. They were replaced by the Atlanta Hawks, who had also just relocated from Wisconsin.
The Hawks originally planned to play their home games at the Georgia Dome, but they never actually played a game there due to financial problems. Instead, they used the court at Auburn University while looking for a new home. The last game of the Sonics was a loss to the Indiana Pacers on April 13, 1979. Following this game, the owners decided to move the team to Atlanta where they would become the Hawks.
The NBA attempted Kansas City earlier, but the Kings relocated to Sacramento in 1985. That doesn't speak well for NBA expansion in the city, but it does check a few of the required boxes. First and foremost, it boasts a ready-to-use arena, the Sprint Center. It's been called many things over its lifetime including US Airways Arena and The Arena at KCMO. Second, it has a passionate fan base that includes many former players who make their way into coaching positions. And lastly, it fits within the league's financial requirements.
There have been other attempts at bringing a team to Kansas City over the years, most notably by David Stern during his tenure as commissioner. The original proposal would have had the Hornets move from New Orleans to Kansas City. However, this idea was met with strong opposition from New Orleans officials who felt that they could no longer support a team that didn't bring in enough revenue to be viable.
Since then, several other cities have tried and failed to get approval for new teams. In 2017, Missouri governor Eric Greitens proposed a plan to add two teams to the NBA. One team would have played in St. Louis, while the other would have gone to Kansas City. This proposal also met with strong opposition from New Orleans officials who felt that they should be given first chance at re-locating the Hornets.
'NBA Team from Missouri' In 1985, the Kansas City Kings, an NBA team, relocated to Sacramento. In 1968, the St. Louis Hawks did the same for Atlanta. Missouri is the nation's eighteenth most populous state, and it is home to the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, and St. Louis Cardinals. The state capital is Jefferson City.
The NBA returned to Missouri in 2019 when the Seattle SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City. Before this season, there had been no Missouri team since the Spirits of St. Louis became the Memphis Tams in 1979. That team only survived one season before moving to Anaheim to become the California Angels.
In their first two seasons, the NBA's newest teams have both made the playoffs. Last year's champion Toronto Raptors will be defending their title against the winner of this year's series between Philadelphia and Milwaukee. It is expected that the Bucks will win this series.

The team was founded as the Seattle Pilots in 1968 and renamed before their first season began. After three seasons, they moved to Kansas City and were known as the Kansas City Royals from 1969 to 2017 when they announced a plan to move out of Kansas City and relocate either back to Baltimore or Chicago. However, after opposition from many groups and individuals including other MLB teams, state officials, and local politicians, the move was blocked by an injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Julie A. Robinson on March 16, 2018.

The Oklahoma City Blazers were one of eight teams in the World Hockey Association when they began play in 1974. The team was successful right from the start, finishing first in their division each year until 1978, when they lost their last game. In that season, they had captured 48 of 50 games before losing their final contest to the Houston Aeros. The WHA collapsed after two years, but the Blazers continued on as an expansion team in the NHL until 1996. Today, members of the Western Conference basketball champion Los Angeles Lakers have played on at least one of the WHA's remaining teams.
In 1995, the NFL's Buffalo Bills moved to Oklahoma City and became the first major league team to be based in Oklahoma since the 1953 Cleveland Browns left town. The Bills went on to win two Super Bowls during their time in Oklahoma before moving back to Buffalo in 1999.
