Football Terminology: The Sidelines The region outside of the playing field is known as out of bounds. The play ends when a ball bearer walks out of bounds. Out of bounds is identical with "the sidelines," which is the white region that surrounds the green grass of the playing field. Any player who is not wearing a uniform number over the side lines does so to avoid legal blows by opponents.
The sideline is where you go if you want to be out of bounds. If a player runs out of bounds, he or she is said to have crossed the sideline. Just like any other part of the field, the sidelines are divided into inbound and out-of-bounds areas. A player can be out of bounds by crossing the sideline, but he or she cannot be out of bounds by sitting on the sidelines.
Generally, players are allowed to stand on the sidelines during timeouts and breaks in action. However, they must stay within the in-bounds area otherwise they will be called for unsportsmanlike conduct. Even if a player is not wearing a uniform number, he or she can be identified by those watching the game because they know where each player is located relative to the sideline. For example, if a player runs 50 yards down the field before crossing the line, it's obvious he has gone too far and is out of bounds.
A player who moves onto the sidelines during play is deemed out of bounds in gridiron football. Out of bounds (or out-of-bounds) in sports refers to being outside the playing boundaries of the field. It is common in many sports for players and/or the ball to go out of bounds frequently throughout a game due to the chaotic nature of play. For example, in American football, players are allowed to advance beyond the line of scrimmage known as "out of bounds." A flag will be thrown by the official at that point indicating where the player went out of bounds. That can result in a new down being started with the opposing team having another opportunity to score.
In soccer, a player is considered out of bounds if he crosses the sideline while the ball is live. If no penalty kick is taken, then the player becomes eligible to rejoin the game. If a penalty kick is taken, the player is not permitted to enter the field of play until the end of the ensuing free kick period.
In basketball, a player is out of bounds if he enters the court without permission; for example, if a player is charged with stealing the ball and he goes into the lane where there is no space, he has committed an illegal use of hands and is called for a foul. The referee may call a technical foul if he feels it is necessary to prevent a clear and obvious violation of the rules.
What is considered out of bounds in soccer? It is the portion of a soccer pitch outside the area defined by the sidelines and end lines. It is sometimes known as "out of play." If the ball crosses these lines, the referees rule it dead and it must be reintroduced into play through a corner kick or throw in.
The out of bounds area varies from field to field. On fields with high grass levels, such as those found in Europe, there are often large areas of the pitch where the ball cannot be played due to its proximity to any part of the body. In fields with low grass levels, such as those found in North America, there are usually only small areas of the pitch that are not playable because there is no physical barrier between the player and the ball.
There are three main reasons why the ball may be ruled out of bounds: when a player touches it with his/her hand; when a player goes into an offside position; and when a player enters the penalty box. In all cases, the referee has two options: he can allow play to continue or he can signal for a free kick. If a player commits several fouls while the opposition has timeouts, the referee may call him/her for kicking the ball (using his/her foot) out of frustration. This is called "showboating" and will get you sent off if it continues too long.
In football, the boundary lines are the lines on the field that separate the field of play from the out of bounds zones. The sidelines and the space behind the end line, which is behind either end zone, are regarded out of bounds. A player cannot be awarded a free kick for an infringement by another player outside these areas.
The term "boundary" also refers to the boundaries between countries or states. On the international level, FIFA rules state that each team must have seven players within the area bounded by the touchlines and halfway lines, with no more than three players of one nationality. If any player enters this area illegally he or she will be dismissed and penalized with a free kick.
On the national level, each country sets its own regulations as to how many players can be inside this area at any given time. Most countries allow two players outside the box and one player inside it. But some countries, such as Mexico and Germany, allow four players outside the box.
Even if you are not sure about all the rules, it's best to leave yourself some space when playing against someone who might know their stuff. You don't want to get a card for having too many men on the field.
There are several terms used to describe the different parts of the field: goal, penalty box, and area.
The end lines are the lines at each end of the field. The sidelines are the lines that run along either side of the field. The goal lines are 10 yards inside the end lines and parallel to each other. The "field of play" is defined as the space enclosed by the goal lines and sidelines. The term "end zone" is also used to describe these areas.
In American football, the line consists of members of the offensive team. The line forms a wall when it is on the field; without the aid of the line, there would be no way for players to reach the end zones.
The word "line" comes from the French word "ligne," which means "a marked-off section." In English, the word "line" usually refers to the part of the army or navy that is next in line for action.
Linebackers are the first players down the field who line up opposite the tight ends and wide receivers. They may cover one-on-one against the tight end or use their speed to cover large portions of the field. Linebackers can jump very high in order to make big plays on passes over them. They are often the leaders of their defense groups.
Defensive linemen (DLs) are the ones responsible for stopping the line of scrimmage. They include the nose tackle, three-techniques, and two-gaps.
When the ball goes out of bounds before touching a player on the other team during a kickoff, the kicking team is penalized. When the kicking team is punished, the receiving team receives the ball on their own 35-yard line.
The "sidelines" are the white or colorful lines that run parallel to each other and perpendicular to the goal lines on a sports field. The sides of the field are then divided into four quarters by a sideline.
In American football, the term is used to describe the area between the center line and the end line. In addition, the space between each set of sidelines is called the "neutral zone".
The terms in soccer are side lines and penalty area. The side lines are the boundaries of the playing field. The penalty area is the space within the side lines where a player receives a direct free kick if he is judged to have been brought down while inside his own penalty box. Other players are not allowed in the penalty area during play; only the goalkeeper is permitted in it.
The tennis court has two sidelines. One is the baseline, which is a long, narrow strip of grass running across the middle of the court. The other is the net line, which is a small band of mesh just above the baseline off to one side of the court. Players can take shots at anything behind the baseline, but any ball hit into the air goes out of play because it was shot over the net.
The yard line is the boundary between penalties and goals.
