Netball is most popular in several Commonwealth countries, and the International Netball Federation estimates that more than 20 million people play netball in more than 80 countries. The Netball Superleague in the United Kingdom, Suncorp Super Netball in Australia, and the ANZ Premiership in New Zealand are the sport's major domestic leagues.
Australia began playing international netball in 1973. The Australian Netball League was founded that same year, and Australia has since then competed in every World Netball Championships. Netball is also an official Olympic sport.
New Zealand introduced netball to Samoa in 2001, and it has become a popular sport there. Women in Samoa now compete on national teams against other countries across the world. There is even a men's team!
England debuted in 1973, and Ireland in 1995. Both countries have competitive netball leagues with eight teams each. They both also take part in the IIHF World Championship for Handball every four years.
Canada and Jamaica played each other for the first time in 2019. It is being held in Canada from September 6-10 under the auspices of the Canadian National Sports Center.
Canada's national team is called the "Canes". The Jamaican team is called the "Jamaica Stars".
Both countries' teams consist of seven players and one goalkeeper.

Netball is Australia's most popular women's sport, with an estimated one million players across the country. It is also popular in New Zealand, England, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand.
Australia's major netball leagues are the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Both leagues were founded in 1996 and play their games during the basketball season. The NBL is generally considered to be more competitive than the WNBA, which is less structured and lacks some of the NBL's star players. However, both leagues have recently started to attract international attention due to their success on the court.
Netball has also become popular among men throughout Australia. There are several professional netball teams in Australia, including the Melbourne Vixens and the Sydney Stars of the ANZ Championship. The sport is also played at a high level in New Zealand, where the national team has won two gold medals at the World Championships and a third bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to these sports leagues, there are also amateur netball leagues in Australia. These games are usually played during school holidays or over winter weekends.

Australia's national team, the Diamonds, also competes in international tournaments. So far, they have won two silver medals at the World Championships and one bronze medal at the Olympics. They were defeated by Canada in the final match of the 2016 World Cup of Netball.
Canada is the only country other than Australia to have ever beaten the Diamonds. At the 2009 World Netball Championships, they upset the favored Australians 58-56 in the first-ever match between the two countries. However, Australia went on to win the tournament anyway.
Netball is one of those games that most women remember playing in school, but it's becoming increasingly popular among adults as well. Over 300,000 of us now play netball every two weeks. That equates to 50,000 more persons participating in the sport between May 2018 and May 2019 than the previous year.
There are about 1,500 men's teams and 2,500 women's teams in Australia. That means there are nearly three men's teams for every woman's team!
In addition, there are also unisex teams, mixed gender teams and transgender teams. The number of people participating in netball is growing fast which means more money being put into the game. And that means better facilities for players of all ages and abilities.
Overall, there are more men playing soccer than women. There are also more women playing basketball and rugby than men.
