Marlin Briscoe, nicknamed "The Magician" for his ability to pull incredible plays out of a hat, is possibly the most renowned and well-remembered player in the history of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and he was the first Maverick to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The all-time leading scorer in UNO basketball history, Briscoe set several scoring records during his four years with the school's ball club. His 3102 points are still ranked third in NCAA Division II history.
After graduating from UNO with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1971, Briscoe went on to have a highly successful career in professional football. Over the course of eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets, he won two Super Bowl rings with the Raiders. He was also selected to three Pro Bowls. In 1989, Briscoe was part of the inaugural class of inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame. He died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 42.
Briscoe played high school football in Omaha before enrolling at UNO. Even though he never coached or recruited at any level, Briscoe was able to make an immediate impact at his new university. As a freshman, he scored 51 points against Eastern Illinois University and became only the second player in NCAA Division II history to score 50 or more points in a game.
Since then, there have been periodic attempts to urge Pro Football Hall of Fame voters to acknowledge Rote, who was the only man to lead a club to championships in both the NFL and the AFL. Rote was honored into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame last year.
"He could throw the ball and had a spiral." He appeared to be gifted—I guess that's why they dubbed him The Magician, because he was able to accomplish things that other quarterbacks couldn't. " Perhaps this is why, despite having only a few sessions under his belt, Saban and the Broncos threw Briscoe into the action.
Briscoe started three games for the 1972 champion Denver Broncos and completed 9 of 19 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown and an interception. He also ran for two scores in those games. Briscoe played in four games for the 1973 Broncos and completed 4 of 8 passes for 52 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
In conclusion, Briscoe was not very successful as a quarterback but did show signs of being a future star by throwing a football well and running for touchdowns.
71. Not in the Hall of Fame. Wicks, Sidney Earl was one of the first big names in basketball who only played for one team his entire career. He had a very successful career with Boston Celtics from 1936 to 1950, when he ended up winning the first championship ring ever awarded to a player not named James or William Frederick "Bill" Russell. In 1951, the Celtics again won the title so Wicks got to share it.
He also won an Olympic gold medal with the American team in 1948.
Wicks had some trouble staying healthy throughout his career and suffered through several knee surgeries, but he still managed to average 20 points per game during his final season. His best year was 1947-48 when he averaged 26 points per contest.
After his playing days were over, Wicks became the general manager of the Celtics. He held this position until he died in 1958 at the age of 42.
Today, Wicks is considered by many to be one of the best centermen in NBA history. He's now mostly known as one of the first stars of old college basketball who helped bring basketball to America. The Sidney Wicks Center at Harvard University is named after him.
Two Syracuse icons are on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame in 2022. Former Syracuse defensive end Dwight Freeney and wide receiver Marvin Harrison were among the 78 former FBS college football players who were eligible to vote. Both were on the 2021 ballot, and Harrison is on the ballot for the fourth time in a row. He's not expected to get in this year.
Freeney was a four-year starter at Syracuse from 1997 to 2000. During his career, he recorded 105 tackles, 19 sacks, and two interceptions. After graduating from Syracuse, Freeney went straight into the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. He played eight seasons there and was a three-time first-team All-Pro selection. In 2008, he led all defensive linemen with 14 1/2 sacks.
Harrison attended Syracuse from 1985 to 1989. As a Golden Domer, he set school records for receptions (106) and receiving yards (1,409). The Indianapolis Colts selected him with the second overall pick in the 1991 NFL Draft. Harrison went on to play 12 seasons in the NFL and was a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Indianapolis Colts. He ranks fifth all time in NFL history in both receptions (851) and receiving yards (10,964).
Freeney has had a very successful career so far, having already earned a spot on the Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot. He's currently ranked eighth with a percentage of votes needed to be elected.
Marshall played college football for the Florida Gators and was named a consensus All-American twice. He is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
In 1989, Marshall was voted by his peers as the first player from the Florida State University football team to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The following year, he was again selected as a first-team All-American. Marshall died on January 26, 1990 at the age of 36 after suffering brain damage due to an injury he received during a game the previous fall.
He had been hospitalized since then, and was survived by his wife and two children.
Wilber Marshall was not only one of the best players that the Florida State Seminoles has ever produced, but he was also one of the most successful as well. He earned all-conference honors three times while playing for the Seminoles, and was also chosen as a first-team All-American twice. After graduating from Florida State with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1951, Marshall went on to have a very successful career in sports as a coach. He finished his career as the all-time leader in starts made by a Florida State quarterback with 42 games played. In addition, he holds the school record for touchdown passes with 21.
A biopic film titled The Magician, based on Briscoe's life, has been under development for several years. Lyriq Bent has been approached to portray Briscoe in the film.
