On the ice, Boston College and Boston University are tied, despite the fact that BU has won five national championships. The Eagles' latest title came in 2009 when they beat Florida State 5-4 in overtime at Madison Square Garden.
Boston College's football team has had more than its share of success as well, winning two national titles in 1950 and 1957. They have been ranked No. 1 by the AP poll twice, in 1948 and 1949. In addition, the Boston College Eagles have 13 other years being ranked in the top 10.
The basketball team has won two national championships: in 1939 over Penn State and in 1974 over Michigan State.
In 1997, the Boston College Eagles became the first college team to win 100 games during a season when they defeated Maryland 103-72. They finished with a 108-4 record under head coach Joe Mazzitelli.
In 2007, former Eagle quarterback Matt Ryan led the Atlanta Falcons to their first Super Bowl victory over New England 24-22. During his time at Boston College, he passed for 12,965 yards and 116 touchdowns and ran for another 963 yards and 14 scores.
The Boston University men's ice hockey program is one of the most historic in NCAA Division I hockey, having played its first game in 1918 and capturing five national titles while appearing in twenty-two Frozen Fours. BU has won twelve major conference championships... and thirteen regular season titles.
Boston University began play in the 1917-18 school year as a member of the New England Hockey League (NEHL). The following season, they joined what was then known as the American Ice Hockey Association (AIHA) for their first intercollegiate game when they faced Harvard at Boston Arena. In 1920, the two schools formed a permanent rivalry that continues to this day. As members of the NEHL, BU played against some of the best teams in the country including Harvard, Yale, Penn State, and Providence.
In 1922, the university dropped "New England" from its name and became known as Boston University. They left the NEHL after one season to join what was then called the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), now known as the Big East. During their time in the ECAC, the Terriers were undefeated champions three times (1926, 1927, and 1928). In 1930, Boston University joined what was then called the American Intercollegiate Hockey Association (now known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA) where they have remained ever since.
