How to prepare for a tandem skydive in Florida?

In Florida, be ready for your first tandem skydive. You've chosen your drop zone and are jumping for the first time with an experienced skydiving crew that has checked, double-checked, and triple-checked every detail, but is there anything else you should know? Yes, there is more to know and learn when it comes to being ready for your first tandem...

First, you'll need to decide if you want to go with a group or solo jump. Some people prefer the safety in numbers approach while others enjoy the privacy of going it alone. Group jumps usually take place over a single location while solo jumps can be done at multiple locations across Florida. If you get the chance, try both types of jumps to see which one fits you best.

Next, you'll need to decide what type of tandem skydive you want. There are several options to choose from including formation flying, distance diving, and concourse diving. Each type of tandem provides a different experience for your first jump. We'll discuss them all here but first, let's go over some general safety guidelines for tandems.

The most important thing to remember about tandem skydives is to have fun! Your skydiving partner will be responsible for helping you land safely so make sure they can provide this service by asking questions and listening to their answers. Also, don't be afraid to speak up if you feel like something isn't right.

How do you skydive under 18?

To do a tandem skydive or start skydiving instruction in the United States, you travel to your local drop zone, sign a legal disclaimer of liability, pay, jump, and then tip your tandem instructor (please!). Because a waiver is required, you must be at least 18 years old to jump. However, many instructors will let younger people join if they are careful not to put themselves or others at risk. In addition, some states allow minors as young as 15 to sign waivers on behalf of an adult guardian.

The decision to let someone else take care of you during a freefall is a big one that should only be made after consulting with a parent or guardian. There are many dangers associated with jumping out of airplanes, including experiencing severe G-forces, going too high, too low, or off course, landing in dangerous areas such as rivers or buildings, and being unable to stop yourself from rolling over during a crash-landing.

People often want to know how young you can be allowed to be when you jump. The answer to this question depends on what state you live in. Some states allow anyone age 16 or older to sign a waiver, while others require you to be at least 18.

Do you have to tandem skydive your first time?

At Skydive California, we recommend doing one tandem jump before going alone to get a feel for what's to come, and then it's off to solo! You will begin your solo 'category' jumps in our Accelerated Freefall program (AFF) after an exhaustive 4-6 hour class. During this class, you will learn all about safety procedures and practice them together with your instructor. You will also learn how to use the equipment that will be provided during your jump, such as helmets, parachutes, and altimeters.

After completing the AFF class, you will be ready to go solo. We recommend jumping once or twice a month throughout the season (depending on weather conditions), so you don't want to rush things and start diving out of control out of fear.

Most people are comfortable jumping from around 1000 feet, but if you're not sure whether you'll be able to handle higher dives, let us know when you book your trip and we can adjust your profile accordingly. Some people prefer to start their dive at an altitude below them, which is fine too!

Overall, our experience shows that most people can handle tandems once they get into them, but if you are still nervous about diving out of control, don't worry about what other people are doing; just follow your instincts.

Happy jumping!
