Casillas was an unused replacement at UEFA Euro 2000 after making his full international debut against Sweden on June 3, 2000 (at the age of 19 years and 14 days). He was a member of the FIFA World Cup squad in 2002, originally as an understudy to Santiago Canizares. However, following Canizares' withdrawal due to injury, Casillas took his place for the last group game against South Korea.
Iker played the entire match as Spain were defeated 1-4 by Korea. He became the first player to captain his country while being born in another continent when he did so in the 89th minute of that match.
Spain went on to finish second behind Italy at the tournament. Iker Casillas ended up winning the Golden Glove as best goalkeeper at the European Championship.
He made his second appearance for Spain later that year at the Olympic Games in Sydney, where the Spanish men's team reached the quarterfinals before losing to Argentina 2-3. Casillas kept a clean sheet in his side's opening match win over Australia before conceding three goals without reply in the next game against Brazil. He finished the tournament with five saves out of six shots faced.
In 2003, Casillas won the UEFA Champions League with Valencia. That season he also won the Pichichi Trophy as the top scorer in La Liga with 33 goals.
Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has returned to the club to serve at its foundation, the club said on Tuesday.
A statement on www.realmadrid.com announced that Casillas had "agreed to return" to the club he joined as a youth player in 1992. He went on to make over 200 appearances for Los Blancos.
"I am very happy to be back at Real Madrid and I want to thank all the fans who have sent me messages of support," Casillas said. "I also would like to thank my family for their backing."
Now 40 years old, Casillas was one of the most important players for Los Merengues during his time there, helping the team win two UEFA Champions League titles and one Spanish title. He left the club in 2014 after agreeing a contract with Portuguese side Porto.
However, his career was plagued by injuries and he only made 14 appearances for Porto before moving to American club Houston Dynamo the following year.
He continued to suffer injuries while at Houston and was released by the club in June 2017.
Casillas returned to Spain that month when he signed with newly promoted league club Las Palmas.

Spain became the first nation to retain the European Championship, winning it again in 2012, where they set a tournament record for the longest continuous minutes without allowing a goal (509). Casillas became one of four players to represent Spain at four World Cups in 2014.
