Although work on Yankee Stadium began in August 2006, the project lasted several years and was fraught with controversy, notably the large public expense and the loss of public space. With a $1.5 billion price tag, the new Yankee Stadium is one of the most costly stadiums ever built. It was also the biggest waste of money by any major league team.
Yankee Stadium was designed by McKim, Mead & White, who also designed Washington DC's and MLB's other new ballparks (Dollar Park in New York City and Federal Park in Philadelphia). Since 2010, the Yankees have played in a brand-new $2.3 billion ballpark bearing the same name as the previous. The new Yankee Stadium is larger and better than the previous New York Yankees Stadium, with 63 percent more room. It has more seats (40,000), more public space (including a giant plaza outside the front door) and more office space (1,400 square feet).
