Dalton is one of only 10 quarterbacks in NFL history to have passed for over 3,000 yards in each of his first three seasons, and one of only six to have thrown for at least 20 touchdowns in each of those three seasons. The other five quarterbacks are Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Randall Cunningham, Tim Couch, and Aaron Rodgers.
A sixth quarterback joined the group this past season when Dalton threw for 4,814 yards and 37 touchdowns. That man is Peyton Manning, who won the league's most valuable player award last month.
Dalton is the first quarterback in Cincinnati/Baltimore franchise history with multiple 4,000-yard passing seasons, and he's the first quarterback in Baltimore/Cincinnati franchise history to post three consecutive 200-plus yard games (201, 223, and 319 yards against the Steelers). He's also the first quarterback in Baltimore/Cincinnati history to throw for over 300 yards in four straight games (317 against Pittsburgh, 311 against New England, 303 against San Diego, and 302 against Philadelphia).
The last quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season was Brady in 2007. The last rookie quarterback to do so was Manning back in 1998. Both men went on to win the MVP award that year.
Manning passed for 290 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. 5 September 2013: Peyton Manning passes for an NFL record-tying (and career-high) seven touchdowns and 462 yards as the Broncos defeat the reigning champion Ravens 49-27 on the first night of the regular season. 8 October 2013: Manning throws for five touchdowns and 426 yards as the Broncos beat the Chiefs 51-28. 23 November 2013: In his ninth season, Manning throws four touchdown passes without an interception as the Broncos beat the Dolphins 38-33 in Miami. 6 December 2013: Manning throws for 505 yards and six touchdowns as the Broncos beat the Raiders 57-21. 9 January 2014: In his 10th season, Manning throws for five touchdowns and 419 yards as the Broncos beat the Texans 48-28.
The previous record was held by Tom Brady with 47 touchdowns against only 7 interceptions in 2004 and 2005. It is worth mentioning that this record was tied twice previously: by Manning himself and by Brett Favre.
In addition to these records, Manning also broke several other passing records in 2013: most consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass (17), most seasons with at least one touchdown pass and no interceptions (18), highest percentage of passes completed (76.9%), most yards per attempt (9.3), and most total touchdowns (57).
A look at the eight instances in NFL history that a quarterback has thrown seven touchdowns in a single game.
Randall Cunningham has the two lowest-rated 400-yard outings in the league (50.5 and 52.0; both were losses). Quarterbacks have passed for at least 500 yards passing twenty-five times; the most recent instance being Ben Roethlisberger's 501-yard performance against the Cleveland Browns in 2021.
With 115 games, Drew Brees has the most games with 300+ passing yards. Who has the most games with 300 or more throwing yards in a regular-season game? StatMuse contains game-level passing yard data dating back to the 1950 season.
Kurt Warner is the first Super Bowl quarterback to have thrown a 400-yard game. Only seven times in the regular season have two quarterbacks accumulated 400 passing yards in the same game, and only seven times has one quarterback had two consecutive 400-yard games. In 1943, the first year in which a quarterback threw for 400 yards or more,
In 1951, Norm Van Brocklin set an NFL record with 554 yards throwing. None of these games are among the top 10 in terms of yards per attempt in a game with 400 or more passing yards. Thirteen of the twenty-five games have been won by teams with a 500-yard passer.
Peyton Manning established the NFL record for most passing yards in a single season in 2013, as he threw for 5,477 yards with the Denver Broncos. The previous record was 5,097 yards set by John Elway in 1995 with the Denver Broncos.
Manning already has more than 5,000 yards this season and is on track to break several other records when he plays in his second game of 2014 against the Miami Dolphins on September 19. The most interceptions thrown by a quarterback in a season is 56, set by Manning's teammate Brock Osweiler in 2015. If Manning throws another one this season, he will break that record too.
The question isn't even if but when Peyton Manning breaks the all-time yardage record. He's been on track to do so since Week 3 of last year when he had 4,374 total yards. In fact, only nine players have ever reached or exceeded 5,000 career yards from scrimmage (combining passings and running). Eight of those players are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The other one is Manning.
Osweiler himself is on track to break several other records when he plays in his second game of 2014 against the Miami Dolphins on September 19.
