Dwight Howard played with the Magic from 2004-05 to 2011-12; the Lakers from 2012-13 to 2015-16; the Rockets from 2013-14 to 2015-16; the Hawks from 2016-17 to 2017-18; the Wizards from 2018-19 to 2019-20; and the 76ers from 2020-21. Overall, he has played in 556 games (all with the exceptions of 44 with the Rockets and 1 with the 76ers) and has averaged 26.4 points, 14.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.5 blocks per game.
Howard was drafted by the Magic with the number-one overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft. Dwight Howard's NBA career was almost over before the 2019-20 season began. The NBA looked to have lost interest in the former Defensive Player of the Year after he played for four different clubs in four seasons and participated in only nine games for the Washington Wizards. However, on October 17, 2019, the Orlando Magic announced they had signed Howard to a one-year contract.
He was released by the Magic at the end of the season but did not retire from the game. He has agreed to play with his old team, the Los Angeles Clippers, in the opening game of the season on Oct. 18. This will be his first game action since January 2016 when he played eight minutes in a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
The 36-year-old center announced his retirement on March 23, 2017 after seven seasons in the NBA. At the time, he ranked third all-time in blocks per game (2.1). Since then, he has changed his mind several times about continuing to play basketball. In May 2018, he returned to practice with the Magic after missing the entire previous season because of surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back. Two months later, he decided to continue playing in the NBA despite having no other options to fulfill his contract. On November 22, it was reported that Howard had rejected opportunities to play in China and Argentina and was looking to remain in the NBA.
Howard forfeited his right to opt out of his contract at the end of the 2011-12 NBA season on March 15, 2012, the day before the trade deadline for the 2012-13 season, and committed to staying with the Magic through the 2012-13 season.

However, it appears that won't be the case as he's signed back up with the Lakers in an effort to finish out the remaining year of his contract.
It's been over 10 years since Howard last played for the Orlando Magic, and during that time, he's become one of the best power forwards in NBA history. He's still got plenty left in him though, as he showed in 2019 when he averaged a career high 26.1 points per game. It's also worth mentioning that he only turned 36 earlier this month so there's no reason to believe he can't continue playing at a high level for several more years.
Even after signing with the Lakers, it doesn't appear that this is anything other than a contractual move for Howard as he looks to finalize his resume before entering the 2020 Olympics with USA Basketball.
