One Scottish-born player has played for England; John Bain made his only appearance against his homeland in 1877. The England team that year was considered to be one of the best in history, which makes Bain's inclusion even more remarkable.
Bain was born in Edinburgh and started out as a goalkeeper, moving to play as an inside forward. He joined English club West Bromwich Albion in 1876, having already earned several caps with Scotland. The match against England at Hampden Park, Glasgow, was his only game for Albion. Bain had an excellent career with Scotland, earning 50 caps and scoring 13 goals.
He returned to Albion after one season away from the club, but he was not very successful and left the club after just one season. Afterwards, he went back to Scotland where he finished his career with Dunfermline Athletic.
Bain died in a hospital in East Kilbride at the age of 36. However, it is believed that he had been suffering from tuberculosis for some time before his death.

Since Watson, no black players have represented Scotland until Nigel Quashie made his debut on May 27, 2004. Quashie was born in London to a Ghanaian father and an English mother, and his grandfather qualified him for Scottish citizenship. I was born in the Austrian town of Steyr to an African-American father and an Austrian mother. He is the first black player to appear for Scotland, having been invited to play by manager Craig Brown after scoring 14 goals in 45 appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion.
Scotland has never had a black captain, but there have been several prominent black players including Charlie Hutchison, Wilf Ross, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, John Barnes, and Paul Dickov. The most recent black player to be called up to the national team was Justin Douglas, who was given a run out during a January 2016 training camp in Switzerland.
There are currently two black players playing in the Scottish Premiership: Dwight Yorke (Dundee United) and Michael Higdon (Inverness Caledonian Thistle). Black players are also involved with the senior squad, with Davide Bianchi and Alessandro Diamanti being called up recently. However, they are not considered first choice and only make the match day squad.
It is a historical fact that Scotland has never had a single black player in its professional league. However, several high-profile black players have featured for the country's amateur teams or at school level.
McNeil became the first Rangers player to play international football when he represented Scotland against Wales in 1876. The Rangers' first captain was Vallance. With 74 appearances in the Scottish Cup, he retains the record for the most by a Rangers player.
