Its all-time membership high of 9,631 was established during the 2014/15 NBL season. Season subscriptions start at $25 per game and go up from there. Annual memberships are also available.
The team is based in Western Australia, with its headquarters located in downtown Perth. The Wildcats play their home games at the new Perth Arena. The opening ceremony was held on 23 September 2013 with the first game being played less than 48 hours later against South East Melbourne Magic.
Before the arrival of the Wildcats, the Perth Bullets were the city's most successful basketball team, winning four National Basketball League championships between 1989 and 2003. The club now plays in the Australian Basketball Association under the name "Western Australia Wolves".
New Zealand has had a presence in the NBL since the league started in 1978. The Auckland Stars were one of the original eight teams that made up the inaugural season. They went on to win the title that year before falling short in the playoffs the following two seasons. The Stars returned in 1980 and stayed for three more years before moving to Japan to join the Japanese Basketball League. They remained in Japan until 1986 when they came back home and relocated to Adelaide where they remain today.
The National Basketball League (NBL) began with nine clubs in 1979. Many of the teams changed or ceased to exist as a result of club expansions, cutbacks, and relocations. Currently, there are seven teams in Australia and one in New Zealand.
The NBL returned to free-to-air television in Australia for the first time in three years, with One broadcasting 2-3 games a week. The 2010-11 season saw the return of the Sydney Kings after the club was purchased for A$20,000 on July 31st, 2008. In 2013, the NBL had a de-merger from Basketball Australia.
The Wildcats went on to have the most ever attendance for a club during an NBL season, with 183,689 fans turning out for their home games during the 2017-18 regular season. Since 2012, the team has been obliged to spend much of December on the road owing to Perth's annual staging of the Hopman Cup at Perth Arena in early January.
The record was previously held by the Bulls, with 179,513 fans attending home games during the 1995-96 season. That figure includes 1,179 people who were given free tickets by promoter David Matthews because there weren't enough players available to make up a full roster. The record was later broken by the Warriors when they attracted 181,829 fans across the course of the 2015-16 season.
Perth's average league attendance has increased steadily over the past five seasons, rising from 10,542 in 2012-13 to 18,517 in 2017-18. The Wildcats have also had the best home record in the NBL over the same period, winning 67 per cent (122 of 182 games).
In addition to their home games, the Wildcats play three away games each year that are attended by less than 5,000 people. These "special" games usually take place when another Australian basketball team is visiting, or if there is a match between two high-profile international teams.
Sydney FC has achieved a new membership record for the sixth time in seven seasons, surpassing the 15,000 mark for the second year in a row to stand at 15,700 members. The Club has added more than 20,000 members since its inception in 2005.
The Club's official website is www.sydneysfc.com.au. Highlights of the team's season are posted online at sydneysfc.com.au/live.
Sydney FC plays its home games at Allianz Stadium, located on Symonds Street in Sydney's central business district. The match day squad consists of 16 players, with an additional two substitutes bringing the total to 18 players. A fan of Sydney FC can become a member by making a one-off payment of $249 or monthly payments of $12.50 per month (includes administration fees).
Membership packages include a range of benefits, including exclusive access to watch games live, take part in forums and chat rooms with other fans, and more. There are also youth programs available for students from 5 years old through to seniors who want to play soccer weekly.
Despite the reduced amount of games, lower stadium capacity, and uncertainty surrounding the season, the club's 2020 membership total of 51,577 members beats their 2019 membership total of 51,431. Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick was astounded by the amount of Fremantle members that backed the club in 2020. He said at a press conference on 24 March that the number of members was "incredible" and pledged to get more fans involved with the club.
Fremantle began the new season with a loss against Carlton in round 1 before defeating Richmond by 26 points in its first game at Optus Stadium. The club will play its home games at the new Perth Stadium from the 2021 season after signing a five-year deal worth $25 million with the Western Australian government. The Dockers will remain at Subiaco Oval until then.
In October 2019, it was reported that Fremantle had signed up 500 new members since the start of the season. This brings its total membership to over 55,000.
The Dockers have also announced plans to launch a women's team by the end of 2022 - which would make them only the second club in the AFL to have such a team (after the Adelaide Crows). The club has not released any details about how much it costs to be a member of the women's team or what level of sponsorship might be available.
Victoria has seen unprecedented levels of involvement. Todd Greenberg, the NRL's chief executive, told the ARL Commission on Thursday that 36,900 people in Australia were playing rugby league for the first time in 2018. That makes it the biggest year-on-year increase in almost 20 years.
The figures come from an annual survey conducted by the Australian Rugby League Commission which aims to identify the number of participants in its community programs. The number of women playing rugby league has increased by 70 percent in the last 10 years, and there are now more than 3,000 girls involved in junior clubs across the country.
In Victoria, there are more than 100 junior club teams with over 6,500 children participating. The Victorians are the most active state with 1.5 million hours of participation each year. They're followed by Queensland (1 million) and New South Wales (750,000).
The most popular age groups are under 13 years old and 14-17 years old. There has been a shift towards younger players after several serious injuries have occurred on older fields.
The Victorian government provides funding for up to 1000 new players to participate in training camps held throughout the year. These opportunities are open to anyone who wants to try out for a team.
