Rugby union - This is the first time this sport has been included in an Olympic program. According to Business Insider, Team USA has the largest representation in the Rio 2016 Olympics, with 554 athletes participating. Unsurprisingly, Brazil will have the highest delegation in the country's history, with 462 athletes participating in the games. Germany had the second-highest number of athletes at the Berlin 1936 Games with 230.
The United States has been the most popular choice among athletes who want to represent their country at the Olympics since 1980. In total, American athletes have taken part in every single Summer Olympics since then, with the exception of 1984 when America boycotted the Moscow Games over the Soviet Union's support of North Korea.
In 2009, American athletes won more than half of all medals awarded in the Beijing 2008 Olympics, including a record number of gold medals. They have also dominated the sport in recent years: from 2000 to 2015, American athletes won 95% of all Olympic gold medals awarded in swimming, diving, and water polo.
Overall, Americans have won nearly 70% of all Olympic medals awarded in the period between 2000 and 2016. The next biggest group of countries are the Russians with 43 medals (8 gold). Germans also have a strong presence in Olympic sports with 39 medals (6 gold). Canadians and Britons each have 7 gold medals. None of these countries has reached the level of American dominance yet, but many are hopeful that can change at future games.
