There have been 69 hat tricks in the NHL this season, ranging from Fabian Brunnstrom's (notes) three goals for the Dallas Stars on October 15, 2008, to Evgeni Malkin's (notes) three goals in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The most recent hat trick was scored by John Tavares of the New York Islanders at 19:56 of the first period on April 13, 2009.
The last time there had been three consecutive hat tricks in a single NHL season was by Wayne Gretzky from March 14 to April 4, 1989. The last time there had been two consecutive hat tricks in a single playoff year was by Gordie Howe in 1975 when he played all seven games for the Detroit Red Wings. The last time there had been a single hat trick in a playoff series between two different teams was when Eric Lindros of the Philadelphia Flyers did so in six games in 2004. If you include today's game, there will be 70 career hat tricks in the NHL.
Gretzky's record is now being threatened by Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who has two straight hat tricks this season and has already reached three goals three times. If Crosby continues his scoring pace, he will break Gretzky's record before the end of the season.

Hat tricks are one of the NHL's most unusual accomplishments, with just 97 occurring during the 2018-19 season, or around one in 7.6 percent of games. This is more unusual than a shutout, which occurred 154 times in 2018-19, or once every 12.1 percent of games, or a shorthanded goal, which occurred 233 times last season, or once every 18.3 percent of games. A player who accomplishes this rare feat receives a "shorthand pass" from the official scorer.
The first known case of someone performing a "hat trick" in the modern era of hockey occurred on March 24, 1919, when Montreal Canadiens forward Charlie Querrie did so against the New York Rangers. Prior to this game, however, it was determined that no one could score three goals in a single game; therefore, to qualify as a hat trick, players were required to have some type of assist on their scores. So, even though Querrie had no assists on his three goals, they were still considered "official" because the rule had not yet been established otherwise. He went on to play in another game that night, but it is unknown what happened with respect to his third goal.
Since then, several other players have scored three goals in a single game without receiving any assists, but they have never done so at the same time. He had seven NHL hat tricks and one in the WHA against the Jets, his most against a single team. He scored a hat trick in 3.4 percent of his NHL regular season games and one in 5% of his WHA games.
During that time, he scored 15 goals and had two hat tricks. In addition, he scored multiple goals in 24 games, including two hat tricks against the New Jersey Devils. On December 31, he had five goals and three assists against them, and on March 31, he got a normal hat trick.
