There are about 350 NCAA Division 1 basketball institutions in the United States. While there are numerous competitive options at all division levels, many student-athletes have their sights set on playing at one of these D1 basketball universities, which are regarded as some of the best men's basketball programs in the country.
The number of players per team ranges from 5 to 10, with an average of 6.7. The majority of D1 men's basketball programs were founded before the 1950s, but several schools have emerged in the last decade - including several former football powers that have decided to add basketball as a sport. In fact, several of these new basketball schools have achieved great success in the arena of sports other than men's basketball!

There are around 350 Division I women's basketball universities in the United States for the most outstanding high school basketball players. While competition is strong at all levels, competing at the D1 level means playing alongside and against some of the top women's basketball teams in the world. These games are often referred to as "title games".
Currently, there are only three schools that do not have a D1 women's basketball team: California Baptist University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and West Virginia University.
California Baptist University was founded in 1961 and initially played as an independent before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 1971. They left the WAC in 1976 and became a full member of the NAIA. In 1978, they joined the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference before returning to independence in 1982. In 1990, they rejoined the WAC but left it again in 1996 after being denied re-entry into the NCAA due to financial issues. They have been non-competitive since then.
Palm Beach Atlantic University was established in 1965 and originally played as an independent until 1970 when they joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). They remained with the NAIA until 1979 when they moved up to Division 1 status in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). In 1983, they left the ECAC and became a full member of the Big East Conference.

You are not alone if you want a college basketball recruiter to offer you a scholarship to play in NCAA Division 1. At the Division 1 men's level, about 4,500 players are on scholarship, while over 5,000 women's basketball players have full scholarships to play collegiate basketball. Many more get partial scholarships or don't pay anything.
The number of men's basketball players on scholarships has been falling for several years now. While approximately 4,500 players were on them in 2009-10, that number is expected to drop to about 3,900 by 2014-15. The decline has been due to cuts made by schools to their athletic budgets during the economic downturn. When money gets tight, coaches tend to cut costs anywhere they can. That usually means less funding for sports programs and sometimes even firing teachers who don't generate any revenue.
There are still far more men's basketball players than there are women's games, but the number of female athletes on scholarships is growing. Between 2009 and 2010, the number of women's basketball players on scholarships increased from 2,100 to 2,200. This season, only 2,200 women's basketball players will be offered scholarships, which is the fewest since 2003-04 when only 2,150 were offered.
Many factors go into whether or not an athlete receives a scholarship. Their grade point average, test scores, career aspirations, etc. are all taken into account.
D1 colleges range in size from small private institutions to the major universities in the United States. Scholarship options differ according to sport and school.
