New York City is one of just four metropolitan regions with two baseball clubs (Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco being the others). The New York Giants (now the San Francisco Giants) and the Brooklyn Dodgers were both formerly based in the city (now the Los Angeles Dodgers). In 1957, the Giants moved to San Francisco while the Dodgers relocated to Los Angeles.
In 1869, Henry Chadwick invented the first successful batting helmet. The New York Metropolitans played in the newly formed American Association for that season. The team was owned by a group of New Yorkers who had been attracted to the town by the prospect of making money from the sports lottery. The franchise failed but was soon revived as part of another new league, the National League, which began play in 1876. This time the team survived for only three seasons before going bankrupt and being replaced by another new club, the New York Nationals. They too failed and were replaced by yet another new team, this time the New York Giants. Like their predecessors, the Giants also lasted only three seasons before going bankrupt. At this point, there were so many defunct baseball teams in New York that the owners of the remaining clubs met and decided they would merge the surviving teams into one single organization: the New York Yankees.
In 1913, the last-surviving franchise, the Giants, joined up with the National League's Brooklyn Dodgers.
The Queens The New York Mets are a Major League Baseball club headquartered in Queens, New York. They play in the National League (NL). The team was founded as the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1883 and moved to Los Angeles in 1958. The franchise name is derived from the original name of Manhattan, New York.
The Mets have only appeared in the World Series twice, in 1969 and 2000. They lost both games. Their closest attempt at reaching the Series again came in 2012 when they were defeated by the Boston Red Sox 4 games to 3 in the Division Series.
The Mets have one of the most loyal fan bases in all of sports. They have had many great players wear the blue and white uniform over the years including Dwight Gooden, David Wright, Mike Piazza, and Johan Santana. However, since the 2000 season has been played under the ownership of Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, who acquired the team during the 1972 bankruptcy sale of Eddie Mayer's estate, has brought success to the table first-hand. The current manager is Mickey Callaway who took over after the resignation of John Gibbons in September 2017. He previously managed the Cleveland Indians from 2015 to 2017 and led them to the World Series in 2016 before being fired.
The New York Mets play in the National League East. They are one of two major league teams headquartered in New York City, the other being the American League East's New York Yankees. The Mets were one of baseball's first expansion clubs, formed in 1962 to replace New York's departing NL franchises, the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. They have played their home games at Shea Stadium in Flushing, Queens, since 1964.
Shea Stadium is a football stadium that has been used for baseball games as well. The original stadium was built for the NFL's New York Giants football team. When the Mets moved in, they found that the stadium lacked some features required for baseball, so they added lights, an infield, and a facade designed by renowned architect Robert Moses. The Mets left Shea Stadium after the 1965 season and moved into new headquarters: New Manna Park at Shea Stadium. That same year, the original version of what is now known as Citi Field opened its gates for baseball. However, instead of charging admission, the Mets made all tickets available for free; the only charge for fans was a $5 parking fee (which is still true today). In 1969, when the second game of a doubleheader was rained out, the remaining game was declared a split decision victory so that both teams would share record number two behind the Yankees. This is the reason why there are two versions of the Mets' logo - one with a "1" and one without a "1".

New York City has a long tradition of baseball fandom, and the Yankees are one of the most popular teams among the New York metropolitan area. They've won almost every award there is to win including MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Cy Young Award. Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio are the only players to win the Triple Crown twice.
