Carry tools in a tool belt or use a hand line to lift tools. Never climb a ladder while holding tools in your hands. Extend the ladder's top three feet above the landing. Keep any slippery materials away from ladders. Use caution not to fall off of ladders.
The best way to avoid carrying tools is to allow another person to do it for you. If you must carry tools, then use a tool belt with heavy-duty straps that can support the weight of all the tools combined. Make sure the tool belt is comfortable and fits properly. If you are working at height, always wear safety equipment provided by your employer. This includes protective footwear, gloves, eye protection, and a protective suit or jacket.
Tool belts should be worn around the waist, but they can also be used across the chest if there is not enough room around the waist. Make sure the tool belt does not put too much pressure on your body parts such as the stomach or lower back.
Hand lines are also useful for lifting objects. They can be attached to the wall with a hook or loop fastener (such as VELCRO) and used like a leash to pull objects up or down. Ensure that you know how to use hand lines before you need to use them.

What should you do when ascending or descending a ladder?
Many of our clients come to us for assistance in finding alternatives to ladders and stairs. Although we believe that access equipment is typically the most safe and effective way to operate at height, a ladder may be necessary at times. Here are just a few options:
Scaffolds provide a safe, secure, and controlled working environment. They can be used for heavy-duty applications or where close-up work is required. However, due to their size and expense, they are usually only used at sites where safety is not an issue such as for private home repairs or remodels.
Stilts allow you to get up high but remain stable and comfortable while standing. Stilts are often used by people who need to climb up tall buildings or structures without using a ladder.
Tripods serve the same purpose as a ladder does for getting up higher; however, they do so with less risk of injury because you are relying on some form of support instead of holding your own weight. Tripods are commonly used by photographers who need to get a clear view from a great distance away.
Peak bangers are explosives-based tools used for blasting holes through rock. The operator stands back and lets the explosion do the work for him/her.
For safety, have a companion hold the bottom of the ladder. If you don't have somebody to accompany you, you may always use a sandbag or something else substantial to keep the bottom of the ladder in place. This allows your companion to take over if needed.
You can also use a harness for this purpose. Attach one end of the harness to the ladder and the other end around your partner's waist. Now your partner can stand behind you while you climb up the outside of the building.
Finally, you can always use a rope to sneak someone up a wall. Tie one end of the rope to the doorknob of a room where no one will be during your climb. Then, pull your partner up after you are done climbing.

At higher elevations, objects look closer together and seem to jump out at you. You can avoid injury by allowing yourself more time to make decisions about how to proceed.
