Virginia Tech was named "one of the toughest 20 venues to play" in college football in an unofficial ESPN survey. The atmosphere is intense, and the stadium is constantly full. It is one of the top college football experiences in the country, with over 66,000 seats and a rowdy mix of supporters. The stadium is also known for its unique architecture, featuring a partially covered stadium with no roof and no walls on any side other than the east end zone.
When it was built in 1992, Lane Stadium was the largest college football stadium at the time. The stadium has been expanded several times since then, most recently in 2013 when new luxury boxes were added to increase capacity to 85,000.

These two schools met for the first time on November 26, 1976. Since then, Virginia Tech has gone on to claim eight conference titles and make seven appearances in the National Football League championship game while Miami has won two national championships and appeared in three other title games.
The Hokies currently lead the all-time series 12-4-1. However, it should be noted that Virginia Tech's record includes games played against Division I-A and Division I-AA teams while Miami's only major sports franchise was not formed until 1945. Therefore, these two programs did not meet during most of the early years of college football.
In addition to being one of the oldest rivalries in the country, this game also serves as an important part of the ACC vs. Big East rivalry. The Hokies are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Hurricanes play in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Virginia is also an AAU member and a quality academic institution that would be a good fit for the Big Ten. In expansion, on-field success does not always imply success, although Virginia has not had a season with double-digit victories since 1989. However, they are expected to be one of the top teams in college football this year.
Virginia's athletic department received a rating of 80 out of 100 from the College Sports Journal. This makes it a "high-quality" program.
The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 as the Industrial School for Boys. It became a university in 1838. Today, it is among the largest universities in the state with a student population of about 44,000. It is located in Charlottesville, which is 45 minutes away from Washington, D.C.
The Cavaliers are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference and have been since the league was formed in 1953. They played as an independent until then. Before that, they were members of the Southern Conference from 1952-51 and the Big East from 1970-2011 where they won three championships - 1971, 1978, and 1979 - when the Big East was still called that instead of its current name.
