Miller announced his retirement from the NHL on April 29, 2021, at the completion of the 2020–21 season. Miller played his final NHL game on May 8, 2021, a 4-3 overtime defeat to the Minnesota Wild. He finished with 36 wins, a 2.40 goals against average and.924 save percentage in 485 games over 14 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers.
He was drafted sixth overall by the Sabres in the 2005 NHL Draft.
After playing for the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where he won a gold medal, Miller signed as a free agent with Växjö HC of the Swedish Hockey League on July 1, 2010. In September 2011, he returned to the United States and signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres. He went on to win the Jack Adams Award as the best goaltender in the National Hockey League in 2013.
On April 29, 2019, just prior to the start of the 2019-20 season, the Vancouver Canucks announced that they had re-signed Miller to a two-year contract extension. The deal will see him earn $10 million over two years.
In October 2019, it was reported that Miller would be willing to return to the Buffalo Sabres if given the opportunity.

He was drafted by the Sabres in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2003 NHL Draft. He played three seasons with their junior team before making his NHL debut on October 4, 2006. Over the next eight years, he would go on to become one of the best goalies in the league while helping the Sabres reach the playoffs every year. In 2015–16, he won the James Norris Trophy as the league's best goalie. On July 9, 2016, the Sabres signed Miller to a seven-year, $49 million contract extension.
In 2019–20, Miller went 15-13-7 with a 2.91 GAA and.908 save percentage in 36 games (all starts). This marks his first season back from hip surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2017-18 campaign. With such a strong performance this season, many expect Miller to continue playing at an extremely high level into the future.
When asked about his future plans following the season, Miller said he was not sure yet but would have to consider all his options when it comes to playing career.
Miller, 34, has announced his retirement from the NFL. Miller announced his retirement on Tuesday with a poignant Instagram post, saying he's leaving the game because he "physically cannot give the game and our fans what they deserve." The Arizona Republic's Paul Coro notes that Miller recently had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck.
Although the injury wasn't believed to be serious at the time of its discovery, doctors later discovered that it had caused severe nerve damage. Doctors also said that the injury was likely the reason for some of Miller's recent health issues, including seizures that forced him to retire last season.
