When riding or operating a nonmotorized scooter, bicycle, roller skates, or skateboard in the aforementioned places, any youngster under the age of 18 in California is required to wear a helmet. This applies even if they are wearing clothes or armor that protects their head.
The fine for not wearing a helmet while riding these things is $25. The first violation means you will be required to purchase a license. Additional violations within 12 months of the original conviction mean that your license will be revoked.
Even if you are old enough to vote, drive a car, or drink alcohol, you still need to wear a helmet. The information provided by our office is intended only as an overview of the law; we strongly recommend that anyone who is unsure about their legal rights call a lawyer immediately.
Almost all skateparks in the United States require regulars to wear helmets in order to enter. In California, skaters under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet on any street or public location.
Title 39:4-10.1 Helmet Law Anyone under the age of 17 who rides a bicycle, is a passenger on a bicycle, or is towed as a passenger by a bicycle must wear a safety helmet in New Jersey. This helmet rule was expanded to encompass roller and inline skates, as well as skateboards, on August 1, 1998.
In California, what safety equipment is necessary to ride an ATV or UTV? When riding an ATV or UTV in California, all riders, not only those under the age of 18, are obliged to wear an authorized helmet. Riders under the age of 16 must also wear a protective shield. A valid driver's license is all that's needed to operate an ATV or UTV.

Riders under 16 may not use a helmet that meets California safety standards for adults. If they do, they will not be able to ride with anyone over the age of 15.
Helmets should fit properly and be in good repair. Make sure your kid's helmet fits correctly by checking their head size first. Then, take it for a test drive around the block or parking lot to make sure it fits well. You should be able to see most of their head when wearing the helmet. If it gets in the way when driving, it's not fitting properly.
Kids' sizes usually come on the back of their heads so there's no way to know exactly how big they are until you put one on.
Florida Statutes Instead, Florida has a rule that mandates them to be worn exclusively by riders under the age of 16. Unless their communities have approved special legislation against it, riders 16 and older are permitted to ride without helmets.
In fact, Florida is one of only eight states in America that does not require children under 18 to wear helmets when riding bicycles. The other seven are Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
The Florida Bicycle Helmet Law was first enacted into state law in 1971. At that time, it was required that all cyclists under the age of 16 wear protective headgear. Riders 16 and older were exempt then as well as now.
Since its creation, this law has been revised twice more. In 1995, the minimum age requirement was increased to 18. And in 2009, the exemption for young riders was eliminated completely.
Currently, in order to be legally able to operate a bicycle in Florida without a helmet, you must be either younger than 8 years old or 65 or older. If you are between 8 and 16, you still need to wear a helmet, even if you are going fast or doing donuts in the street. The same thing applies if you are someone's mother or grandmother, but not your own mother or grandmother. In that case, you can ride without a helmet too!
