Suarez was voted on by his fellow players as the best hitter in the NL. The 22-year-old finished with 132 votes ahead of Daniel Murphy (81 votes). Suarez became just the third rookie in history to hit over.300 with at least 100 RBIs and 10 or more home runs. The previous two players to do so were Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams.
Suarez is only the second player from Uruguay to win the MVP Award, after Diego Lugo in 2005. The last Uruguayan to win the award was Omar Vizquel in 2003.
Suarez was also named the Rookie of the Year by both the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) and the Sporting News.
