Hayley Wickenheiser, a six-time Olympian, four-time Olympic gold winner, and world champion hockey player, has become a doctor. She revealed her qualification on Twitter over the weekend, saying, "What a trip, and in the midst of a pandemic to boot." Wickenheiser, who plays for the National Hockey League's (NHL) Florida Panthers, had previously said that she was thinking about becoming a doctor after her playing career is over.
Wickenheiser played junior hockey before turning pro with the NHL's Vancouver Giants in 1995. The following year, she joined the national team as they prepared for the Winter Olympics. Wickenheiser went on to win four gold medals at those games. In 2001, she became the first female athlete to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games when she took home the gold in women's ice hockey.
After her hockey career ended, Wickenheiser completed medical school at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She became only the second Canadian woman to be awarded her country's highest medical honor, the Meritorious Service Medal. In 2019, she was named to the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) official Hall of Fame.
Wickenheiser will begin her residency this summer in family medicine at the University of Calgary. She plans to take some time off from medicine to focus on her hockey career during her free time.
