According to league sources, veteran guard Darren Collison has opted not to return to the NBA this season and intends to retire. Collison averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 assists in 10 seasons with the Pacers, Clippers, New Orleans Hornets, Kings, and Mavericks. He was drafted second overall by the Pacers in 2009.
A six-year veteran, Collison last played for the Dallas Mavericks in 2018-19. He finished that season with averages of 2.4 points and 3.3 minutes per game in 46 contests. The 28-year-old California native spent the first five years of his career with the Indiana Pacers, appearing in all but one game during that time frame. Collison's best season came in 2012-13 when he started 75 games for the Pacers and averaged 11.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. He also received interest from several teams prior to joining the Mavericks this past offseason but ended up returning for a third stint with Indiana.
In 901 career games over 10 seasons, Collison has averaged 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. He won't be missed by Dallas or the NBA community at large.
He was anticipated to get many contract offers totaling approximately $10 million each season.
He finished his career with the Dallas Mavericks and played only 6 games in 2014-2015 before being traded to the Indiana Pacers. In 99 games played during that season, he averaged 7.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
Before becoming an NBA player, Collison had already earned a degree in sociology from Kansas State University. He is also one of four players in NBA history (the others are Mark Eaton, Eric Murdock and De'Andre Hunter) to score at least 20 points in their first three NBA games.

He played college basketball for Kansas State University after graduating from Woodstock North High School in Rockford, Illinois. As a senior at K-State in 2009–10, he averaged 14.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while shooting.443 from the field and.813 from the free throw line.
Collison was drafted by the Phoenix Suns with the 28th pick in the 2010 NBA draft. He was then traded to the Indiana Pacers, where he stayed for three years before being acquired by the New Orleans Pelicans. After one season with New Orleans, Collison returned home to the Indiana Pacers when they bought out his contract. He ended his career playing for the Washington Wizards.
As of 2019, he has over 100 steals recorded in his NBA career.
He won the 2011 Slam Dunk Contest during the All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles.
Collison's wife is named Jessica and they have two children together: a son and a daughter. His son died in April 2017 due to heart failure when he was only 9 years old.
