ESPN is a global cable and satellite television station located in the United States that concentrates on sports-related content such as live and pre-recorded event telecasts, sports highlights, chat programs, and other original programming. The channel was created in June 1979 by Howard Stringer and John W. Martin who also founded CBS Broadcasting Company at the time. It originally broadcast for 12 hours a day from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST with two hours of continuous sports coverage between noon and 12:00 p.m. In addition to its base in the United States, ESPN is available in more than 170 countries around the world.
In May 1980, the channel launched a daily news program called “SportsCenter”. The program currently runs for approximately 15 minutes nightly and reports on major sports events happening during the day (such as baseball games and NBA basketball matches) as well as ongoing sports issues (such as controversial calls during athletic competitions). In addition, every night at 11:30 p.m., SportsCenter broadcasts a special one-hour show called “Top 10”. Hosted by Chris Berman, this segment features videos of the top stories from over the previous day.
Besides being available via traditional cable television providers, such as Comcast, Charter, Verizon FiOS, and AT&T U-Verse, ESPN is also offered via satellite service.
ESPN HD Channel 850 is followed by ESPN2 HD Channel 850. Cox Communication High Definition. Channel 1032 of ESPN HD. Channel 1033 of ESPN2 HD. DirecTV HD. ESPN HD Channel 206 and ESPN2 HD Channel 209 are also available in high definition. DISH Network HD (High Definition). Sling TV - ESPN 2.
An HD television set can display video in higher quality if it is capable of receiving channels in high definition, which most modern sets are. Before cable and satellite television, home viewers had to make do with lower-quality standard-definition broadcasts. Today, consumers have a choice between purchasing an HDTV set or not. The same is not true for cable and satellite subscribers. They are forced to buy HDTV sets or else miss out on the highest-quality programming.
Of course, not all cable and satellite providers carry every channel in high definition. So before you subscribe to a cable service, be sure to ask what channels they offer in high definition so you don’t get surprised if they don’t include some you want to watch.
Here’s how to find out which cable channels are available in high definition: Look on your television guide for any channel that has “HD” after it. If it’s not there, then that channel isn’t available in high definition.
