On Sunday, August 8, 2021, the Class of 2021 (Alan Faneca, Tom Flores, Calvin Johnson, John Lynch, Peyton Manning, Bill Nunn, Drew Pearson, and Charles Woodson) will be formally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The ceremony is held at Canton's beautiful Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Hall opened in 1963 with 5-time MVP Joe Namath, who was introduced by his brother Robert, a member of the selection committee; he was the only player elected at his first tryout. Since then, 39 players have been enshrined including 3 coaches, 11 officials, and 24 contributors.
The NFL announced on April 17, 2020 that the event scheduled for July 19-20 had been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The league has not said when or if future ceremonies will take place.
Canton (Ohio) The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton, Ohio, for three main reasons: (1) the American Professional Football Association, later renamed the National Football League, was founded in Canton on September 17, 1920; and (2) the Canton Bulldogs were an early pro football power, even before the NFL. The team's home stadium, Bulldog Park, was located just a few blocks from the hall. (3) The first NFL game was played in Canton on December 11, 1920, between the Chicago Staleys and the Cleveland Indians.
