Your cards aren't worth selling unless they've been graded. An player can play for 20 years and have 20 distinct cards for each season, but they can only be a rookie once. Because the business did not generate baseball cards in the same way that it does today, really old cards became valued by default. If you have a card from any era, it will likely be worth something.
Old cards are worth more because there are fewer players in professional baseball than there used to be. As baseball has become a huge industry, so too have card companies entered the market to cash in on their success. They reprint many cards from past decades which increases their value substantially.

Football cards were first issued by American Paper Airco in 1949. Prior to then, sports scenes and action photos were used on greeting cards. The first set featured photographs of American football players taken at Dartmouth College. The set was called "The Campus Card Set" and it was sold for 5 cents per card. In 1950, the company changed the name to Topps and began issuing baseball cards as well. In 1952, the price went up to 10 cents per card.
Bobby Witt Jr. rookie cards are all over the place in terms of value... you may get some for a few dollars, while others (like the one below) can fetch several thousand dollars. Overall, though, they average out to be about $150 per card.
Witt was a first baseman who played for the New York Yankees from 1992 to 2001. During his time with the team, he got the nickname "Bobby Witt Jr." because many people thought his name was too short to be an actual baseball player. He is most known for hitting three home runs in one game during the 1996 season. At the time, this was the most ever by a Yankee rookie. Today, it's considered a minor miracle since baseball players are not supposed to hit more than one per game. He has two sons who both play basketball. His son B.J. plays center for the Virginia Cavaliers while his other son Braxton attends Vanderbilt University.

SANDY ALOMAR JR. #002 MARLINS RED SOX The second issue of this set was also released in January 1992. It features Alomar this time at third base wearing jersey #3. The card is in excellent condition with no creases or stains.
This card is less rare than the previous one but it is still quite valuable. It is estimated that only 500-600 copies were made of this card and few remain in good condition. One example sold for $140.00 on eBay in 2010.
Sports card collecting is not a decent investment; it is an excellent investment. You simply need to know which ones to purchase. When deciding what cards to buy, consider the condition of the card, where it was produced, and its value. Also take into account how much space you have for your collection.
